Just hope the weather plays ball, and a few hit the books- and hopefully will meet up with a few AFA's on Saturday. My day is planned out, with the airfields to visit locked in. Happy Days Bob

LAA RALLY TODAY I have seen on a number of sites people moaning about queueing and arriving with pre-paid tickets. Those with pre-paid tickets thought that they allowed them to go straight through. It seems that Eventbrite had not informed them that they must obtain a wristband on showing there prepaid receipt at the counter. Note: there was a separate counter for those that had prepaid to get their wristband. NON LAA MEMBERS wanting to go airside must visit the LAA TENT when they have been allowed to go through, to pay and obtain their airside wristband. This system has been in use for years. The only winner is Eventbrite who have charged those pre-paying a fee and ticket cost. Pre-payers should have a moan to Eventbrite if they have not been informed about the requirement for wristbands. NOT MOAN ABOUT SYWELL PROCEDURES. I WAS THERE TODAY AND THE QUEUEING SYSTEM WAS THE SAME AS IN PREVIOUS YEARS, THEREFORE NOT WORTH MOANING ABOUT. THE MOANERS WERE ALSO VENTING THEIR COMMENTS IN THE QUEUE TODAY -- THEY NEED TO SHUT UP. WRISTBANDS NEED TO BE WORN TO SHOW SECURITY FOR ACCESS TO DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE AIRFIELD. LES

I fully agree that people shouldn’t complain at the event staff- presumably they’re all volunteers and without them it would not run.
However, the system and experience (for some) is worth a complaint- to the right people. For example, my friend - an LAA member, who had bought tickets in advance. He knew he had to pick up a wristband as is done every year. How long should it take to show your ticket and membership card and receive a wristband in return? Well, he arrived in a short-ish queue just before 11 and it took him an hour! Bear in mind that the selling point of purchasing in advance was “to avoid queues at the event”. And also, with a booking fee, you paid more - yes I know it was only a pound!! - but what is the point, if you stand in a queue for an hour, alongside another queue of people who haven’t pre-booked? Well that was his experience and not surprisingly he was pretty annoyed.
Probably even more annoyed when ten minutes later, I turned up with my pre-booking and walked straight through with no queue at all!!
So, due luck with time of arrival, the system worked for me- but if I’d queued for an hour I would certainly be complaining to eventbrite (who I’m sure would have no interest at all!)

No problems today- Saturday- I arrived just after half nine and went to the Eventbrite queue and was in in 5 minutes- only gripe I have is that the Airside access wristband today was red and white- asked if I could have a blue and white one, lol but they are for tomorrow- staff were very quick- great day with some nice stuff entering the book. Now where's that beer. Happy Days Bob

LAA RALLY SATURDAY 4th September 2021 Sue and I were at the LAA RALLY again today and we had another good day. We did not meet any AFA members but we did meet Friends of Barton spotters from the Manchester area. We lived in this area a long while ago. With reference to the Blue Scouse man comments not wanting a red and white wristband - I would gladly have accepted the red and white one ( Man Utd ). We did not require one as we are LAA MEMBERS. With reference to my previous report re. MOANERS -- thanks to ZZ and Bill S for your welcome comments. LES

Morning Guys,
Heard rumours floating around the show that the LAA Rally will be moving away from Sywell, due to new ownership of the airfield. Be a great shame if it happens but going back to the queueing system, I think the only hold up is the 9.30am opening of the entrance. We arrived yesterday at 9am and a queue was already in place but TBH, it wasn’t all that bad and when the gate was opened, those in the queue passed through quite quickly. However, after a two year break it was a very enjoyable day spent threading our way through the lines of aircraft…
Wasn’t able to see to many AFA’ers but Mark (Bizfreeq) and Dave and Rob at Luton, on the way home…
Hope all those who made it to Sywell, had a great day… I’m gonna start logging up shortly.
Bill

Morning all,
Heard the same rumour last weekend whilst at the glider championship @ Aston Down, myself & Rob were racking our brains to try & find an airfield that was big enough to hold such an event, possibly back to Kemble, thoughts anyone.

Dave, Cranfield was always a good location for the rally, but Kemble would be a great shout as well- both easy to get too. Happy Days Bob

I'd also heard that it "might" be moving to Kemble which, without wishing to sound selfish, would be great for me as it would only entail a shortish car ride. More than enough room there for sure.

As much as I would like to see it move to Kemble, my local, it continues to be pretty rammed. The south side was normally used for the airshows but that might be a little tricky next year unless they shift all the jets. The north side might be a little cramped given that they would need to find parking space for aircraft and cars as well as the various marquees etc. How about another of my locals - Keevil?? Underused and it covers a vast area.

Never been to Keevil Graham but looking at it on Google Earth,it's a big field with plenty of room so a possible site if this year's event was to be the last @ Sywell.

Keevil would be fine. The RAF use it on a regular basis as well as the Bannerdown Gliding Club. They may have to cut the grass but that's probably it. Access would probably be via the A350 - just a thought!

You can see Keevil's runway from Roundway Hill at Devizes. Keith'll remember better than I but I think the RAFs C130s used the airfield extensively.

The C130's and A400's are still regular visitors along with the AAC Apaches & Wildcat. Check out Matt Williams video of the base - he lives just up the road from you. His video follows:

I was there saturday and think I 'met' Bob / mrbluesky in the short Q ! He went to the pre paid and I bought my entry and was not far behind . Any problems from friday had been sorted . As for a future location - I would choose Kemble but being totally selfish .... How about Chivenor which is a wasted airfield ( and a stone's throw for me !! Probably not practical but a good view ... We could all go on with our choices for the rest of the year . Chris

Chris Chris, You should of said hello- reference locations for the Rally is Wroughton still open, Keevil would be good as well having visited there for the washout that was the G-VFWE. Maybe a bit further north would be a good shout as well, although I cannot think of many airfields big enough to hold the event. Happy Days Bob
