Weekly delivery from Blackbushe!!"Photo of the Day" 19/11/16Next year we mark Blackbushe's 75th Anniversary. All I can say on the subject is that work on the project continues, slowly as many bids won't be answered until we are into the New Year..My fingers are very tightly crossed!! Nonetheless, the project is taking many of my waking hours and disturbing the sleeping ones!! Dithering, sleep deprived, in the POTD vaults this morning I found myself looking back on a previous event that long ago placed similar demands on my waking ans sleeping hours. It's hard to express one's feelings though when after months of trials and tribulations the results of those negotiations at last appear with all four turning and burning. I can tell you, it's quite an emotional experience!! The power of four from 1977! The late Don Bullock and Pete Warren had a fun weekend with us!! She cost me £800 for the weekend, a lot less than nowadays!!Grapes from Greece to Gatwick, via Blackbushe! BAF agreed to adding the Carvair to the show as part of the pleasure flying 'agreement', pleasure flying being carried out in their HP Herald.Four more from Trans Merid., Keith Sissons popped over from EGSS..Dear Alan Chalkley arranged a 'training flight' for us... not everyday a BA 747 takes up the "Basingstoke hold" before making her approach to "London Blackbushe"..! It did look big after spam cans! The power of four in two squared form..maybe the last Varsity formation display ever?I fear today the prospect of airline flypasts are a thing of the past. Ever hopeful of repeating some of the above calibre of flypast from the airlines, the CAA now require any crew indulging in such to have the correct air display authority combined with a raft of other requirements regarding the proposed route and procedures. Sadly, unless things change in the next few months my hopes for some heavy metal fly-bys remain firmly on the ground. Anybody planning a flying display today needs to be aware that the frustration factor is going to be incredibly high, it will cost a huge amount of money, there will be so much red tape flying in the breeze seeing red takes on a whole new meaning, and rather than take on a flying display in 2017 at a new venue - such as EGLK - that person should consider the gentler merits, and health benefits, of gardening. Some of us, it would appear, do both........... Guess what I'm doing this weekend? And the next, and... yawn. PB

'Struth mate, you talkin' about me? Graham, your words of appreciation found the spot, a distinct glisten could be seen in my eyes - I'm gonna have to do my utmost to live up to the expectations you set before me! Tough months ahead, but I'm determined to see Blackbushe's 75th birthday gets the do it deserves..... could be quite interesting?? Thanks again!! "PB"

Another serving from Blackbushe!! "Photo of the Day" 24/11/16My soul seems to have been sold to Blackbushe 100%, suppose it had to happen, but yesterday had a nice break from Blackbushe business while 'enjoying' a stress test on my heart. Two things. One, I lived, which was useful, two, it gave me a change of scene! I await the results, but remain confident that my soul will remain in its shoes until July next year. After that, 2018, hmmm...?? The test being a continuation of NHS care since I was ambulanced to hospital two days before this year's Blackbushe Air Day following a degree - and mildly worrying - alteration of heart beat etc.. Yesterday ran something like this..Forum from 0530, hospital, 75th phone calls/emails, afternoon four hour site meeting at BB, evening Forum stuff, 75th emails until bedtime.. too stirred to sleep following the evening's email content - (excitment at possibilities..). Now it's another day to be filled with Forum, phone calls and emails, ground exhibition, flying programme, you name it. I will be looking for one or two names to add to our strength before too long as this thing is growing and specialists will be needed, and the jobs will not be easy... Main thing is that the 75th is taking shape, beyond that I'll say no more... Now, back to the Forum. POTD is currently taking a look at post 1960 Dakota operations, but following the last couple of days diversion as focus shifted toward the antiquated Annie, perhaps some reminders of the Anson at Blackbushe so far as the POTD vaults are concerned?? Having emerged covered in cobwebs, been mocked by mice, and burned through several candles down in the vaults this morning, herewith some memories of the venerable Avro product over the years at Blackbushe.. I have no photo evidence of the Annie at Blackbushe during the war, but she was a regular part of activities... Here's another view of one of the Biafran "Annies" during her stay at Blackbushe.. September, 1953, Farnborough Week..63 Group Communications Flight.G-AHIJ, 1950, Ministry of Transport's Anson. Parked at the mouth of the main apron - long dug up by local influencesFarnborough Week in the fifties..RAF Ansons were everywhere, many photos had one - or more - in the background! There's one..includes three types I'd like to see at Blackbushe for the 75th.. who knows?Couple more... Modern times. Farnborough Week in the very early sixties, Blackbushe survives!! Just.EKCO's other Anson, G-ALIH. She and I became firm friends..Your scribe in the right hand seat, taxiing out to do radar calibration during the week prior to SBAC show. 31 August, 1962. Note the vast apron local influences were about to destroy. Still hurts. 08 departure from a very deserted Blackbushe. Terminal 100% intact and in great condition, and all that tarmac!!!Lord Trefgarne's Anson operation, Treffield Aviation. His Lordship was an avid supporter of Blackbushe....finally, our most recent Anson at Blackbushe. I've re-opened the conversation that brought her here this July in hopes that BAe Systems will again sponsor her return for another visit come July 2017.At the moment her return is just another question mark among millions.. Thanks for staying with the Forum dear Reader, I'm about to add photos to Stuart's latest work on heavy aeroplanes at Blackbushe pre 1960, hopefully to be released later this morning. Never a dull moment!! Have a nice day! PB

Another week done..another week nearer the 75th Anniversary next July...meanwhile a look back in time at the south's most unappreciated aviation asset...
"Photo of the Day" 30/11/16If I were a brass monkey, I'd be worried. Just stuck my nose outside so far this morning, and it's cold...... Before I whizz off to the wilds of Oxfordshire, just one view from the Blackbushe vaults... The perfectly formed plateau known as Hartford Bridge Flats - as proven, the most perfect place for an aerodrome. The above from dear Harry Hobden, a controller from the original 1950's Blackbushe Air Traffic, shows the airfield in her very early years, and still relatively new to the "Flats".. It shows an airfield that to this day is still naturally perfectly flat, naturally well drained, that rises above low lying mists, is easy to spot from afar, is in an excellent catchment location, has long clear approaches to her main runway in both directions and is probably the most environmentally acceptable airfield in the south east of England. It's an airfield called Blackbushe - an airfield with so much potential that's just bursting to be let out... Think that says it all...? PB

Another snippet from across the way.... "Photo of the Day" 11/12/16It's Sunday. 05.00. Trying to get the grey cell into thinking mode, but not happening quite as fast as I'd like. The way most mornings are, but this one seems a little more stubborn... Maybe a rapid transit through the airfield's life will serve today? War. 1942-1945.London's second airport. 1945-1960.Blackbushe, the United States Navy's only UK land base until 1960.Plenty of military movements, large and small..Destruction. 1960.Nightmare, locally sponsored. 1962/3Wilderness. Majority of Blackbushe saved by AVM "Pathfinder" Bennett without whose action/purchase there would be no Blackbushe today. 1960-1972.Doug Arnold bought the airfield and brought his Warbirds of Great Britain with him. Built hangars and rebuilt Spitfires. 1972-1986.Blackbushe had hangars once again, and some interesting new residents!Bought by British Car Auctions in 1986, the airfield was given a facelift, a new Control Tower and the terminal completely refurbished.Sunday Market. Love it - or hate it... Started in the 80's by Doug Arnold, closed a couple of years ago by BCA..Today, Blackbushe is the home of Blink, Europe's largest jet air taxi company or Wijet as the company evolving from a recent merger is known. The Airport is owned by a consortium armed with exciting plans for the future..That's the roughest history of Blackbushe ever, but it paints a picture. I think pain killers have numbed the thinking processes today.. From POTD, see you tomorrow, have a great day!! PB

Thanks as ever Peter. The overhead shot of the market brings back some memories - my late Dad was a trader and we often did Blackbushe together. It was always a sell out, we'd drive up there with a Bedford CF van loaded to the gunwhales, and always drive home picked clean.

Another view from Blackbushe, Blackbushe past... "Photo of the Day" 22/12/16Three days, that's all, and Christmas with all its trimmings will be here - and gone equally fast! I find it a happy sad time, happy for the friendships and family without whom it would not be so happy, sad for the friends and family who I'll not be able to share things with anymore. A curious emotional mix of Christmas past decorated by the mind's own tinsel as one reflects on the many years now passed. Through the long dark nights and swirling December mists one can almost feel a Dickensian tug toward the good old traditional times where the population was less inclined to do what I'm dong now..sitting behind a glowing screen! But for you dear follower of the singular subject but hopefully varied "POTD", I hope my hours logged behind the glowing screen will continue for a while longer! Moving on, or rather backwards, the words "Christmas past" ring loud and clear the visions of Blackbushe past..funny that! How nice it would be if one could be allowed to see an old friend called "Blackbushe" just "once more"... The odd thing is that while I harbour some long distance memories of Blackbushe, upon which hangs the basis of the One-Stop Forum, if I were to suddenly have that wish granted - and see the airfield as it was in the fifties - would my close held memories match up with this magical revelation of yesterday? Or would the memory have over glamourised Blackbushe past in the way it may have tinselised memories of one's childhood Christmases? Possibly, but it would be an amazing experience to find myself standing surveying what used to be.... once again, with not one invading tree taking over these precious aviation acres, just a vast flat grassland with the buildings, the people, the hangars, the aeroplanes, - and the spirit - just for a minute to take stock of what has been missed for so long.... Yes, the magic's still there, the tear rolling down my cheek seems to confirm it! ...it's just harder to see nowadays. PB

Another mouthful from me.... "Photo of the Day" 14/01/17We've almost arrived at January's mid point. We've actually had a dusting of snow, quite seasonal, trains disrupted and flights cancelled in advance at the mention of the "S" word (again quite seasonal), the temperature is equally seasonal as nature's weather systems go about their business. Mother nature threatens the east coast with her tidal surges, but there's one place where unwanted surges threaten not because of the Met Office or mother nature but due to local circumstances - and that's in my head!! These surges are those of almost complete despair as a certain non departmental governmental body are doing all they can to bring a halt to the 75th Anniversary celebrations in July. They have succeeded in driving away a universally well known motion picture company losing the Airport valuable revenue, but in the name of environmental protection my frantic efforts since last September to create the "75th" could also go to worms. Yes worms, some of the very creatures that are contributing toward this dilemma. To date I've lost a large amount of my own money, and worse a vast amount of time putting together events for the 75th - at one's age time's value grows exponentially as the clock ticks!! "Your money, or your life..", in my case it's both!! Any day now the 75th financial backers are going to withdraw if the current dilemma created by an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department of the Environment, Food and Public Affairs - known as Natural England - is not resolved. The flying display that I continue to work on - Bulldog Spirit, and all that - has multi national participation by aircraft from both World Wars, prop and jet participation from types from the fifties, etc etc etc.... The 75th apart from marking a milestone in the old airfield's life is to raise funds for Help for Heroes and Aerobility.. But, no matter, in the name of the environment we all lose. We lose because a public body can come meddling, and interfering. A so called elite drive over us with their self important obsession with control. No longer free, no longer with control over what we can, or cannot do (on our land) as our regulation obsessed, politically correct, risk averse, mindless, elitist driven quagmire of a society is fashioned by politically, supposedly superior, beings who think that what they say is tantamount to the word of God.. Sorry, but that mouthful fuelled courtesy of this body who will not agree to use of a disused runway for a couple of days car parking in July.. protection of the environment! It's private land, but still you're chained down. Meanwhile the environment just south of the Airport has been totally destroyed, a beautiful woodland ripped to pieces for gravel, the most tranquil of settings and a wildlife paradise totally destroyed, but did anybody object to that? Nah...They see Blackbushe as some kind of soft target where their god forsaken control can be unleashed to do its worst... I am fighting with whatever I can muster. I'm meeting House of Lords supporters of our cause, MP's, anything. Time is running out...the show goes on until I protest and finally lie down in front of the 7.42 to Waterloo, providing it's not cancelled. 2017 has not been an easy year to date. So, to cheer everybody up, I give you more work by the dark forces of ancient times who wished no more than the destruction of Blackbushe, one of the south-easts finest airfields...if not the finest! It's "Blackbushe East"!!!!Another of my photo recce missions back in '63 as the dark forces invaded what they could of Blackbushe and destroyed it.... The faint course of Vigo Lane at the time can be seen running north to south across the airfield, through where the runways intersected with continuing service taking out most of the apron and through the Terminal. Everything to the right of mystic Vigo Lane was unceremoniously destroyed. As I mentioned a couple of days ago, once the destruction line defined by Vigo Lane was activated, Vigo Lane magically moved to become part of the old Blackbushe north eastern taxiway - originally domain of the United States Navy. If the east end of the airfield had been subjected to the exchanges proposed by previous owners of Blackbushe at least four people would be alive today had the runway not been hacked by those opposing forces. Blackbushe's eastern end would today look cared for and tidy plus be generating revenue for the local community - instead it is a dog fouled disaster. Just to let you know all is not well this side of the computer screen so far as the 75th is concerned.. but we're not done yet! Greetings, another dribble from across the way on the Blackbushe forum... "Photo of the Day" 04/02/17"I think I'm goin' back.. ..to the things I learned so well....." words from Dusty captured my sentiment this morning on my daily journey into the mists of Blackbushe past. The transit into not the seven ages of man, but the seven ages of Blackbushe. Air Ministry Ministry of Transport & Civil Aviation closed Dart Aircraft DA & Warbirds of GB British Car Auctions Blink consortium I missed the Air Ministry days due to technical reasons that my wonderful Mum & Dad would have to explain, if only they were here to... Otherwise I can so easily slide back into any of the remaining ages of Blackbushe, as can quite a few of our members - hopefully? Air MinistryMinistry of Transport & Civil AviationClosedDart AircraftDoug Arnold & Warbirds of GBBritish Car AuctionsBlink(Wijet) and the Blackbushe consortiumLeaves just one question? What will the eighth life look like??One thing's for sure, I'm doing all I physically (& mentally!!) can to bring Blackbushe back to life in July, if only for a couple of days. To see the old aerodrome truly see its potential released full time would be my dying wish - it's return to a true and serious aviation life is what the current masters intend. Time alone will tell...

Another memory laced slice from the Blackbushe..Today's "Photo of the Day" mentions that I'm hoping for a Bristol Hercules engine to come to Blackbushe75 in July. Be fantastic to hear a Vickers Viking "start up" again! The info came from one of our One-Stop Forum members - IF any of you guys have any leads as to air show "goodies" that I can chase - like this engine - please drop me a line!!
Here's this week's sliver from Blackbushe.."Photo of the Day" 30/01/17No....it can't be? But it is, it must be! Twenty five years have melted into nothing, just as the steam from your breath vanishes on these cold mornings, twenty five years have evaporated since we put together the Blackbushe 50th Anniversary! I know that because apparently we're marking the 75th Anniversary of our much loved airfield this summer... I shudder how soon the next twenty five are likely to pass, and who will do the 100th? No doubt some changes await before that time... hopefully I won't still be waking at 3am when I'm 95 with the Blackbushe stuff that currently wakes me at 3am? If I'm still here to wake up at all will be a bonus I guess? The 50th. Small fry compared with what's in the cook pot for this year, but the frustrations then were nothing vv the matters that have chewed my cerebral cortex to a mere shadow of its former self for the 75th over the past few months... A major meeting this morning that will see significant strides forward toward our July goal.. Blackbushe 50th. On Day One the Monsoon sat on top of the airfield all day, no flying, the RAF from Cranwell being the only inbounds I recall..Simon and his amazing Tucano arrival act!Day Two, Gary Numan and the late Norman Lees gave us a hearty Harvard show, smoke courtesy of some 'borrowed' diesel...Had to pay for this one, but a sparkling show resulted!A famous Blackbushe resident of old returned, but will they no come back again? We asked them...US Navy recruiting campaign? The F-16 I had to turn down skillfully displayed by Stuart..the framed art work presented by the Netherlands government still has pride of place in the Airport Conference Room.Pleasure flights by De Havilland, of course!New shapes..Older shapes...Twenty five years ago. The passing years bring pain, the loss of good friends. Cannot finish mention of the 50th without giving the late David Herrington some thought. Dear David, a person who loved Blackbushe as much as anyone. As a boy he lived very close to the airfield, often he told of wartime days when he and a friend would spend time watching the action at RAF Hartford Bridge - as Blackbushe was in wartime - while hidden in the surrounding shrubbery. I had tried desperately to gather some warbirds for the salute fly-past to occur as the memorial plaque was unveiled on the second day of the 50th Anniversary. Three Spitfires and Mustang seemed quite a good bag! One was lost in a fatal accident, another Spit was lost at Duxford when he dinged his prop before our event...but it was David who thrust his hand deep into his pocket and sponsored the third Spitfire despite not being in the best financial shape himself. The Spit and Mustang arrived overhead at exactly the appointed moment, the sounds of their Merlins adding such meaning to the words of the padre conducting the plaque unveiling - remembering those who could not come back to Blackbushe. There was not a dry eye in the house as we remembered... Thanks to David and another late aviation friend, Spencer Flack, who so kindly gave us his Mustang for the weekend. PB

Greetings from the One-Stop Forum!
Another week logged, and another portion from "Photo of the Day".... "Photo of the Day" 17/02/17I recall vividly the day Adolf Hitler's dreams came true. It happened at Blackbushe Airport in 1977... ....some young chap was running an airshow, an Air Festival, and he had at his disposal a very authentic looking Luftwaffe Ju52 troop transport aeroplane. The show had reenacted World War One with our defending SE5's seeing off an iron cross bearing foe - a trail of smoke leading to where he was last seen plunging toward the surrounding forest.. The scenario moved to the last war, the era that gave birth to flying on Hartford Bridge Flats and an airfield known then as RAF Hartford Bridge. Across the English Channel, as we all know, German troops were gathering, an invasion of our sovereign isle seemed increasingly likely. Had the "Few" not saved us at the 11th hour by deterring the spread of Nazi evil to our shores, our peaceful isle would have changed probably for a very long time.. Thus it was at the Blackbushe airshow in 1977 that Hitler's dream of invading our land appeared - very briefly - to come true! The Ju52 was placed into action and manned by paratroops, not German ones but the British Army's Green Berets from Winchester who very kindly, and enthusiastically, 'jumped' at the chance of invading Blackbushe from a Luftwaffe Ju52. Anti-history, history in the unmaking, call it what you will it was a moment that made you think.... The invasion, one Ju52 with supporting cast...The BBC are about to make us think by televising the Len Deighton novel SS-GB.. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08ghxqbOur storm trooping Ju52; it's a sobering thought as to who and what might have arrived at Blackbushe, then RAF Hartford Bridge, had the tide of history flowed in a different direction..In July 2017 we celebrate Blackbushe's 75 years, no storm troopers admitted - it's always been that way.... In July 1977 Hitler's dream was short lived! PB

Been a bit remiss of late with contributions from the Blackbushe side...hectic times!
Here's a bit from earlier this week! "Photo of the Day" 10/04/17Every now and again something will catch your attention and cause a stir within...Today's headlines, for example, where Russia are using the W A R word if the Donald launches another missile strike, but on a far happier note a couple of photos pinned up in the Bushe Cafe caught my attention over the weekend.. The quality is 'not perfect' and I've no idea from whence they came, but I snapped them with the mobile so as you and our dedicated followers of Blackbushe could share a couple of images from sometime back in the early fifties.. The A30 as it was, no M3, a major trunk road running right through the Airport. Blackbushe south with the familiar Hermes to the right..The photo was captioned "early 1950's" and it must be as all looks pretty post-war rudimentary. Orientation wise, the Britavia/Silver City hangar where the Hermes, and many others were maintained, must be to the right just out of the shot, the taxiway where aircraft were towed across the road being where the coach is... Just shows what a great view the A30 offered to passing motorists with activity either side of the two mile stretch that still runs through Blackbushe. The views are just not so good nowadays, but at least the passing motorist can still see that Blackbushe lives... Taken south of the airfield looking north-westish, obviously during a Farnborough Week of the fifties with visiting aircraft covering much of Blackbushe 'north'...The Terminal Building is just above the photo centre, various wartime nissen huts are liberally dotted around. Aircraft are parked all along the hard standings adjacent to the north of the A30, they also form a slight crescent shape where parked around the entire edge of the apron (note how large it was before the local authority destroyed most of it). Otherwise aircraft are parked on the grass confirming just how solid a base the airfield lies on. The old black freight shed can be seen to the west of the Terminal, while to its east is the main car park and coach station. It's all along time ago, but the first hand memories are still very vivid.... Back soon! PB

Great to hear from you Peter as always and thanks for the photos above. I think ( but am probably wrong..) that the photo of the Hermes is the first one I've seen of the old southside with aircraft parked upon it. Must've been a wonderful sight for passing motorists in those years gone by.

Hi Graham..Here's another morsel of memories from Blackbushe... To answer your comment from 12 APR, there are numerous aircraft photos on the 'south side' dotted around the One-Stop Forum. The Britavia/Silver City hangar and Eagle's hangar both on the south side of the A30... You're right it was a great sight, especially when the traffic was stopped for a Hermes, or whatever, to be towed from north to south, of vv...
Here's yer next serving..with some south side activity! "Photo of the Day" 23/04/17 Six o'clock on Sunday morning, the old grey cell feels as grey as the sky looks as it probes for some new angle that "POTD" has not taken before. The early morning descent into the POTD vaults usually yields something if only a face full of cobwebs and exasperated looks from the resident bats having just completed their night patrols... .... today's photos have surfaced, focused on that delicate subject - the hangars, or lack of them. Blackbushe 'south', the hangar of various resident airlines including, Silver City, Britavia, and Falcon in the days when the airfield was fully operational. At the other end of Blackbushe 'south', the bustling hangar of Eagle Airways, Blackbushe's largest resident airline. We also had the US Navy hangar on north-east Blackbushe... United States Navy, Blackbushe. Just north of the A30, on the now desolate common land you would have found Airwork's complex - a place of much interest and military contract work on Hastings and Javelins for example. The Airwork complex shows the hard blows of Government decision in 1960/61. That or major redevelopment, the ultimate decision was hard to miss.... For a while in the 70's and 80's we had NEW hangars!! At last, but they now belong to a car auction company, and full of used motors - again we have no permanent hangars. Plans for new hangars are in the melting pot, the depth of the melting pot dependent on planning, ancient rights, and legal affairs...If not for anachronistic rights we would again have a Blackbushe Airport with all the trimmings - somewhat smaller than in its glorious heyday, meanwhile..well, we can celebrate 75 years of flying from her runways later in the year. Runways that have hosted Kings, Queens, Presidents and Prime Ministers, and it's not that many runways who can boast that lot!!! Here endeth today's lesson taken from the Book of Blackbushe... Let us pray that she has a brighter future - and the sun shines on July 1st and 2nd... PB
