hi,
17th May 1943.
What a great 24hours for allied air power, first 617Sq. did its stuff, then the USAAFE provided a point in history, by providing at the third attempt the Memphis Belle the 1st Heavy Bomber and crew to complete the magical 25 missions. Although she was actually the 3rd, the 1st was Hot Stuff a B.24 that completed on 7/2/43, that crashed in Iceland on the way home to the US, the 2nd was B.17 Hell's Angels on 13th May, but the A/Corps did not think the name was suitable, so the Belle went home with crew to Bond tours and history…
So back to 617Sq, although with hindsight its effect is called into question, never the less, it put a big smile on faces at a low time in the war, and the effort, skill and commitment, put in by the crews is unquestionable.
I found this on you tube and think it’s a great tribute to 617 Sq. and to all aircrew for their service...
if that fails search you tube for - Dambusters hymn sung by Heather Marie Little.
Stay safe, regards, dave...
