I recently had a holiday in Lanzarote, I flew from Manchester with Thomas Cook AL. It was on time and the flight took 3 hours 55 minutes.
I stayed at the hotel Beatriz Playa in Matagorda, most rooms have a view of the approach with one side of the hotel overlooking the runway.
This is the closest hotel to the airport at Arrecife and it is a short 5 or 10 minute walk to the south end of the runway along a walkway /cycle
path which goes all the way to Arrecife following the airport fence to Playa Honda.
The airport has a north /south runway and usually landings are from the south over the sea unless the wind in a strong southerly.
Spotting is not a problem and good photo's of landing aircraft can be got from the beach on the eastside of the runway in the morning, there is
a double security fence so whilst viewing is no problem photo's are no good of taxying aircraft. In the afternoon a spot to the west of the runway
on higher ground enables good photo's of aircraft as they taxy & line up on the runway. There is also seating and good photo opportunities
along the walk way towards Matagorda.
There is no food or drink available at the end of the runway but Matagorda and Playa Honda both have lots of Bars & Cafes, several of which provide views of the approach.
The busiest days are Thursday (mainly British), Friday (a lot of Scandinavian), Saturday & Sunday. Monday & Wednesday are very quiet.
Tuesday is a little busier.
Airlines to be seen
TUI from all countries except France, Thomas Cook AL, Jet2, British AW, Transavia, Travel Service, SmartWings, Jettime, Novair, Norwegian, Luxair,
Brussels AL, Iberia Express, Vueling, Air Europa, Alba Star, Edelweiss, Eurowings, Volotea, Aer Lingus, Primera, Germania, Austrian AL, Finnair,
Small Planet AL, Enter Air plus loads of easyJet and Ryanair can all be seen.
The inter island flights are frequent with ATR72's of Binter Canarias, Canary Fly and Air Europa Express and a couple of daily flights with
CRJ1000's of Binter Canarias. The Beech 1900's of Serair come in daily with freight about 07.00 and occasionally during the day.
A few military transports mainly CASA 295 and 235's can be seen on some days. A C-130 and an F/A-18 also visited during my stay.
Biz jets can be seen as well but are mainly Air Ambulance types.
For those interested in overflights the departures from Furtuventura usually go right overhead the airport.
Whilst Arrecife is not the busiest Canary Islands airport it is certainly the best for photo's and also for the fact that you do not need a car to
get to it. If staying any distance from Matagorda a frequent bus service, every 20 minutes, runs from Arrecife to Playa del Carmen, stopping at
Matagorda with a 15 minute walk to the end of the runway.
Some photo's later as I process them
