With my eardrums still throbbing from last night's Queen concert at the Wembley Arena I thought I'd post some pictures of the Pivka Park of Military History in SW Slovenia which I visited last week while staying with friends in Slovenia. For non Slovene speakers Pivka is pronounced "Pea You Car" in case you are seeking directions from a local. Its close to the excellent cave complex at Postonya if you are taking the family.

The moderately new museum complex has a large collection of tanks and other military vehicles (including a German WW2 armoured train). Nice cafe too. There are 5 aircraft so far as below -
The only one outside is this Romanian AF Orao. Pity that they couldn't get a genuine ex Yugoslav AF example, particularly as the museum at Belgrade has several spare Oraos in outside store which I graphed a few years back..

This Mig 21F is pretending to be Yugoslav AF 22542 but is really a Czech AF machine 0313 which I saw in the collection at Kbely near Prague many years ago.

Also from Kbely is this Soko 522

The next two were preserved in the military area of Ljubljana Airport for some 25 years before moving to Pivka, leaving another Sabre still at Ljubljana.

The final inmate is this former Yugoslav AF Gazelle which defected to Slovenia during the independence war of 1991 and became the first Slovene AF aircraft until withdrawn after an accident in 1994. Its former Yugoslav serial can still be seen under the paint.

Other aircraft are promised for the museum, reportedly including this Yugoslav AF C47 (71253) currently preserved rather lonely on a hill at Otok in SE Slovenia as a memorial to the WW2 partisans, the RAF having evacuated wounded partisans from a nearby strip during the war. It has a former UK heritage both with the RAF as KG783 and registered as G-AJBH from 1947 to 1952 when it went to the French AF before moving to the Yugoslav AF. I've photographed her a couple of times on previous Slovene trips.

I'll follow this up with a short item on Ljubljana airport istelf.
