Does anyone have any knowledge of EASTCHURCH Airfield on the Isle of Sheppy? It was featured in the programme Flying Across Britain on Channel 4 last night. There is almost nothing about it on various searches I have done.

Hi Filair
If you can obtain a copy, mine's a recent charity shop find
The Military Airfields of Britain - Southern England Kent, Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex by Ken Delve 2005 Crowood Press ISBN 1 86126 729 0
has five pages on Eastchurch and a further 1 page on nearby Leysdown (Shellbeach). They both date from the dawn of aviation in this country.

What a great programme that is, looked like Compton Abbas at the start, then Rochester. The Cub he flies G-BDEY is based at Bidford according to PlaneBase which lists the field as "Eastchurch-Parsonage Farm" with the following residents...

Hi Filair
Apologies for the short note earlier I was about to leave for work.
From the book Eastchurch was declared inactive in April 1947, and most of it reverted to agriculture but part of it was used to build a prison
I have been to the site of the airfield and seen a plaque, all I remember are big fields and no sign of any former buildings etc.
There are I think a cluster of three prisons in the Eastchurch area, probably not what you want on your doorstep but they do provide jobs.

Thanks John, At least it keeps people off the streets! There seems to be an almost complete absence of recent pictures of the airfield.

Interesting that they felt the need to obscure registrations when filming at Biggin Hill.

There are reports on the Biggin yahoo group that "green mesh" fencing has been installed making it v difficult to see/read off the signature apron from the main road now.

This will be to prevent folk gathering on the road outside the airfield while the flying displays are underway this weekend. Crowds along the road could even cause the show to be halted.
Previous green mesh has been removed after the show.
