Anyone know what's happening with ADS-B (adsbexchange radar)? Are the changes we see glitches or planned, temporary or permanent? It's so much harder to use at the moment, and seems to be lagging by a couple of minutes or so.

ADS-B was updated to a new VRS version recently - planned.
The mapping has changed because of Googlemaps' greed. On the plus side, it now shows airfields right down to small landing strips!!
The aircraft ID was changed at the same time and now (this morning) appears to have changed again to show it without the box and with the data now in black.
Yes, it does lag, sometimes by up to 5 or more minutes.
Also, the connection between ICAO, callsign and registration can be a bit disjointed at times.

Thanks for the info Bob, just a question of getting used to it I suppose, it's a great service. Hopefully the lag will get resolved though.

This morning we have black text and no boxes. Not so clear.

Has anyone worked out how to change the display to make it clearer?

Noticed the changes yesterday when we returned from holiday. I have to say that the combination of non background aircraft labels and light coloured map makes it difficult to determine some of the plots. I appreciate these things take time to evolve but let's hope a clearer map becomes available.

Has anyone worked out how to change the display to make it clearer? Don't think one can, Phil, short of just zooming in to separate the plots/narrow the field of display.

Here on the laptop, it's much clearer this morning, with solid backgrounds to the info boxes for each plot. Hasn't changed on the mobile yet.

There seems to be quite a few new trackers out there atm, I know bill is using ‘open adsb’ which is £5.99 for an app on the IOS (iphone ipad) platform but while out fishing with another AFA member we came across ‘adsb flight tracker’ which again is app based but for android phones. There seems to be quite a lot of adjustments you can do with this one.... not played much with it yet though

Does anyone have experience with NATS Airspace Explorer? Does it pick up biz?Military? The quick play me and Effects did while fishing it did show military, although we were keeping an eye out for the elusive Mr Pike and watching kingfishers and geese at the same time. However we did (he did, was on his phone) work out that the info was a feed from adsb exchange so at a guess it was exactly same aircraft that appear on there. The good this was he map and other stuff was modifiable via the user. openadsb also has the same feed I believe, Bill is using it so will get him to comment on the pros and cons

I think the NATS AE may not be suffering from the 5 minute delay on ADS-B’s own app?

Evening Chaps,
As I’ve been mentioned in dispatches I’d better respond... These are purely my feelings, I’m not saying this is the way to do it - but these are my choices. I’ve used SBS, FR24, Planefinder, ADSB and OpenADSB.
All of them have been great but my preference (today) is this; SBS (but I seldomly use it) then FR24 (paid £1.99) and OpenADSB (paid £5.99). The reasons for this is quite simple;
1) SBS picks up almost anything, within range of the arial, but sadly doesn’t always display them on screen - so if you know something is in or around your area, switch on OpenADSB and you should find it.
2) When I’m Out and about it’s got to be FR24, backed up by OpenADSB. Same principle as 1 above.
3) When I want something urgently, my first call is FR24 (airliners), biz-jets/GA; Plane Finder or OpenADSB, military/biz/GA; OpenADSB.
When I first purchased OpenADSB it was excellent, although the display is a bit frustrating. However, over the past week I have noticed that quite a lot of contacts either don’t show or are very slow to show... So my final judgement is still pending.
Changing setting really is a personal choice. I like fairly plain backgrounds with aircraft registration and type. My brain can’t cope with too much info and if I need more I generally click on the contact and lots of other info pops-up.
Ask me again in 6 months time and my choice may have changed!!
Have a great weekend Chaps.
Bill

ADS-B white boxes are back making it much easier to use.

You can change the background colour using the small square box to the right of the "menu" button too

Shame it still has 5 minute delay. Am now using it in combination with NATS AE.

I think the NATS AE may not be suffering from the 5 minute delay on ADS-B’s own app? It's crap and I work for them
