A thoughtful post Dave. My wife lost an uncle in a Wellington from Pocklington in 42. It’s important to remember. Chris

Thanks for posting Dave, hope you don’t mind me adding to it Godfrey Clark, my Grandad, photo was taken in France in 1917. He survived the war and returned home to 35 Murray Road Ealing where he continued his profession of ‘Dairyman’ , but Im sure he left many friends behind xx

Thanks for starting this thread Dave, and thank you also for helping me to find out the story behind my uncle; Lance Corporal Eric Samuels. Eric was killed in action in Malaya, near Kuala Lumpur, during January 1942 when the Japanese advance, from the north, against Singapore. Eric was just 22 years old and was part of the 2nd Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. He doesn’t have a grave, his name is engraved on the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Kranji, Singapore. I was able to visit and pay my respects just a few years ago. I never met Eric and I don’t even have a photo of him… Eric’s mother, my paternal grandmother had died before the Second World War and Eric had joined up and was a regular soldier before the war started. His Regiment had been based in Hong Kong but had moved to Malaya after Pearl Harbour. Always remembered… Bill

It's a sad reality that the relentless passage of time means that in a few years' time, there'll be none of our brave old lads and ladies from WW2 left, just as we said goodbye to the last of the wonderful boys from WW1 a while ago. My dear old Dad who left us almost eleven years ago went into the Royal Marines in 1943 a couple of months after his call up. He never talked about it and I never knew anything about his service until after his passing in 2010 when my Mum showed me some old photographs. He came home safe and sound but lost many comrades including his brother Arthur who perished at Monte Cassino.

I now volunteer with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, looking after ‘scattered graves’ in churchyards. This is partly in memory of my grandfather who was killed in France in April 1918. They will never be forgotten.

My uncle is also commemorated at on the Mercantile War Memorial at Tower Hill. He was Chief Officer on his ship in the Atlantic when it was sunk by a U-boat in 1941. He and other crew members were rescued by an ocean going tug but that was also sunk and he was lost.

What a terrible turn of fortune foxfire to be rescued and then torpedoed for a second time.
