Great stuff lads.
I thought I was seeing things in your second clip Graham so had to replay it. Never ever seen a Caravelle use a breaking chute before - or for that matter, I don't recall ever seeing a jet airliner use one!

Graham , thanks very much . I remember it very well . First visit was during 1959 . Roof just about the same then although the local anouncer was a man by then . Very helpful he was too . There were often crowds up there , not all spotters but fewer in winter months . Queens building was one and six I think and the airport tour was the same . This took us around the BOAC and BEA hangars via what became Eagles hangars and on to south side with Huntin Clan and Air India hangars . No pery track to the west in those days . Once a couple of us came apon the old out of use ground enclosure . This was in the central area more or less above the tunnel . Spent the day there as all facilities were still there , just no one knew about it . In a shot or two you can see the part of the roof gardens for passengers . This was lower than public bit . No , I did not try the various amusements !!!! If only BAA could provide such facilities now . Would be better than that windy stand on north side . And no trees in the way . I think I will play that clip over again ......... Chrisj

I remember at least one of the cross runways being in regular use in the late 60s and early seventies. It was the one that, if you were looking at a map of the old star of David pattern, ran from NW to SE and was the western runway of that parallel NW/SE pair.
Likewise Keith, a Caravelle with a chute!

I remember at least one of the cross runways being in regular use in the late 60s and early seventies. It was the one that, if you were looking at a map of the old star of David pattern, ran from NW to SE and was the western runway of that parallel NW/SE pair. Likewise Keith, a Caravelle with a chute! Yes, I was astounded by the Caravelle too.
Regarding the runways in the 60s, the runway directions were 10/28, 05/23 and 15/33 - and, of course, L and R for each direction, excepting 15L/33R (which had the Queens Building/Terminal 1 built across it when they developed the centre). Of these 10 possible individual runway directions, I have seen 9 of them in use (not 15R).
The most popular landing cross runway was 23L and its reverse 05R (remember the Whiskey Echo tragedy? - I was there. 10s were in use that day). Occasionally, 23R/05L were brought into operation. 33L was used very occasionally in the early 60s, but was discontinued about 1965 (I think to make additional Terminal 3 stands) - I remember seeing DLH and Iberia Convairs landing on it.

At the times in question , I was 'lucky enough' still to be single , also originating from near by Northolt so able to cycle the short distance after school . I had seen one or two Caravels use their shuts , not a frequent thing but one landing on the now 09R was in danger of ending up in the mud ! The runway from over Southall Gasometer was fairly frequently used and the last time I saw it in use was around 1990 . T4 is now at the end of it . Only a couple of times have I seen landings on it from the south , usually in very wet conditions . The one parallel to it , I have only seen in use a couple of times but was very handy as around that time many of us hung about The Green Dragon which was near to the old tower (police station then) , the North Side viewing enclosure and the western end of the North apron . Oh..... shall have to stop these recalls.. Chrisj
