Hi Trevor,
They are not cheap, but you might like to consider the Celestron Ultima 80mm 20x-60x.
www.amazon.co.uk/Celestron-52254-Ultima-Spotting-Straight/dp/B0007UQNUY.
Personally, I have got the one up from that - the Ultima 100mm 22x-66x - and usually use it on the 44x setting.
The only drawback of these is that they are a wee bit heavy for the times when you need to use it unsupported, i.e. some OTTs (stands are available). Apart from that, the big object lens gives you excellent clarity with a nice bright image.
They can also be fitted to a camera via an adapter.
Hope this gives you a starting point.
Cheers,
Bob

Showing my ignorance on these things, how does it compare to say a 400mm lens? I did not realise you could fit telescopes to cameras. It seems a cheaper option than a proper camera lens.

I use the opticron travel scope with an HDF zoom lens. Not cheap but it is light and can be used hand held. They come straight or angled & it fits in my camera bag no problem. best value scope by far in my opinion.

Hi Trevor
I suppose it depends what you want to use the telescope for, how much you want to spend, the magnification you require, the amount of light gathering you need etc etc,
I've used telescopes a lot for ornithology and very useful they are too, some of the smaller C X20's can from experience be hand held but rest may well require a tripod.
I haven't bought a telescope for a long while so I don't know what's currently available.
It may also be worth considering a Bridge Camera just for the X 60 optical magnification alone, I currently use a Lumix FZ82, costs around £300, Eyepiece as well as screen on back of camera. I find it easy enough to use hand held even at maximum range but it does take practise, some nice moon shots recently
Regards
John
