Terrible, one can only imagine the moment of realisation by the cockpit crew that they had made a catastrophic error when it was already too late to do anything about it.

Those of us old enough to remember the pre-revolution days will recall that the then Imperial Iranian Air Force Hercules were regular visitors, mainly to Brize & Lyneham. Not the aircraft involved in the accident but this IIAF B707 was even in the static at Farnborough where I graphed her back in 1976, the year that she was built. Re-serialled 5-8309, then EP-SHG (one of two 707s to carry that reg) and EP-SHV she has been stored at Tehran since Saha failed back in 2013. Some sites claim that serial 5-249 was never taken up, but this was clearly not the case. 76-ff by dave tompkins, on Flickr
