This is a non-spotting sunshine holiday with my wife, who is disabled, but I still intend to see as much as possible.
Arrived safely on G-NIKO Thomas Cook 321,ex Monarch and still showing it’s history on the engine cowlings. Got a free hot meal (unexpected) but the legroom was terrible, I am only 5ft7 but found it uncomfortable.
Caught up with a few frames at LGW, easyJet 321Ns G-UZMA/B/C and Norwegian 789s G-CKWB/D plus B-LRK 350 Cathay. Also the inevitable smattering of easyJet Europe scrapes. British day at Las Palmas so not much around, just 1 of the newer Binter ATRs EC-MVI. Had a window seat but was on the wrong side so could not see the storage area.
Staying at the Costa Canarias, San Agustin. Have an East-facing room on the first floor, from the balcony can see inbounds from the south, and those from the north which take a loop south before lining up for finals. However the ATRs turn too soon and are not visible. However there is a solarium on the 8th floor which I have not visited yet, may give better views. Most of the South American movements go west of the island and are not visible from the room. But just outside is a picture window which faces west, should reveal movements if they are trailing.
Immediate result when I switched on WIFI, PR-XTI 350 LATAM Brasilia heading south trailing at FL370. Also made 9H-MOX CRJ1000 operating for Binter.

Tuesday is a slack day here, and so it proved with just 2 frames, 5T-CLJ 738MAX Air Mauritania and EC-MXQ ATR 72 Binter. 9H-LOJ CRJ100 was a scrape.
Not much opportunity OTT, the Argentinians were too far east and the Chileans too far west. Just one scrape, F-HTIC 330 (ex LTU)
EC-MXE Technam was buzzing around all afternoon.

Cloudier today. Made 3 frames inbound LPA, OO-JBG 738 Tui Belgium, and Binter CRJ 9H-MPA and ATR EC-MYT. But missed a few which turned in too soon including 738MAX OK-SWA, OO-MAX and SE-RTC.
European charter airlines are using their new 738MAXs to and from Cabo Verde, made SP-EXB EnterAir but missed Tui OO-TMY and PH-TFN/O.
Only one South American within spotting range today, LV-FVI 330 which I did not need.

Much better today, with 5 frames inbound LPA, OE-LOD 320 Laudamotion, EI-FYA and SE-RTC 738MAX Norwegian, EC-MOM 788 Air Europa and EC-MTQ ATR72 Binter. Vueling have several flights daily but no sign of their 320Neos yet where are they all?
The Cabo Verde route yielded 3 frames, PH-HXG 738 Transavia, PH-TFO 738MAX Tui and CS-TVB 320Neo TAP.
The only South American OTT within spotting range today were Brazilian, several not needed LATAM 763s and 773s, PR-AIV 330 Azul was a scrape.

Nothing much into LPA today, OY-RUZ 320 and SP-ESE 738 were scrapes.
The Cabo Verde run continues to be profitable, with no less than 3 Smartwings 738MAX OK-SWA/D/E. D-ATYA Tui 738 was a scrape.
South Americans were more interesting today, made PR-XTC 350 LATAM, CP-2881 763 Boliviana was a scrape (ex Alitalia) but missed LV-GKO needed 330 while having lunch. Also returning home from South America we’re EC-MHZ Gulf 650 and EC-MRR F.2000LX of Gestair, don’t have my bizjet spreadsheet with me (too big for Dropbook) but they sound familiar so probably not needed.
EC-HNF PA.32 seen leaving the Aeroclub.
On an all day trip tomorrow so expectations are low.

The good news, clear blue skies all day. The bad news, no trails!
LPA was busy today, but out on a trip 09.00-16.30, so made just one frame EC-MSJ ATR72 Binter and two scrapes, 320s HB-JXK easyJet and OE-LBJ Austrian. (Edit) Make that three scrapes, EC-MUX 319 Volotea just went by.
At last a Vueling 320Neo put in an appearance, EC-NAV, missed it but hope for more later.

Still no trails today, and at lunchtime the sands of the Sahara blew in for the first time, making everything hazy and blotting out the LPA approach. Notable things missed were B-7877 789 Air China on the twice-weekly CA907 MAD-GRU, CP3086 763 Boliviana, EC-MIG 788 Air Europa and OK-SWF 738MAX Smartwings.
Managed to identify things buzzing around all week as EC-LYP JetRanger and Technams EC-MQY and MZZ.

Still no trails. The Sahara sand came and went, blotting out the LPA approach for a few hours.
Made two, G-TUMB 738MAX Tui (slack!) and, courtesy of ads-b, HD.21-18 AS.332L which went low overhead.
PR-ATH ATR72 Azul staged through, presumably returning off lease. Missed it, of course.

A blank day. Still no trails, only two needed into LPA, OE-LOO 320 Laudamotion (recent acquisition from China) and EC-JPF 330 Air Europa, and missed them both.
An interesting overflight (but too far East to see without trails) was ZP-CRN CRJ Paranavia routing Asunción-Valencia, lease return? (Was previously EC-ITU).
Circling just offshore this morning was an orange and yellow PZL W-3A Sokol (for those not familiar with this, like me, it is a large Polish-built helicopter, looks a bit like a Whirlwind). There are 18 currently on the Spanish register, mainly yellow and used for firefighting, but 3 are based in the Canaries, EC-MJH/I/J. Was by the pool and didn’t have my bins so can’t say which it was.

Hi Jerry,
Any chance you know what was the C-130 that took off from there at 10.20 this morning?
Someone on FighterControl has asked the question and would be very grateful for the identification.
Many thanks,
Bob

Hi Jerry,
Many thanks for answering, even though it couldn't provide the necessary.
Have a great time for the rest of your holiday.

No trails, no 738MAX, what is there to live for? Another blank day, apart from ATRs, no needed frames into LPA apart from the mystery Hercules.
At least I won a bottle of cava for getting a bullseye at darts!

Hi Jerry,
Given that the C-130 was not showing on ADS-B today, is it possible that it also wasn't showing when it came in - possibly not on full ADS-B, but just using Mode-S? If there are insufficient SBS/etc sharers down there to MLAT, it wouldn't show.
If that is the case, then a possible candidate would be Spanish AF KC-130H TK.10-12 which departed Spain on 11th in the direction of the Canaries. The plot fizzles out West of Rabat.

Maybe a help, maybe not, but worth considering.
Cheers,
Bob

Trails are back! But to be honest, not much of interest in the air, all the needed South Americans were well out of range. Did make B-7800 789 Air China on the CA907 MAD-GRU, next flight is on Sunday, will be looking out for it.
Nothing of interest into LPA today.

Trails early, made my last LATAM 350 PR-XTH and saw HB-JRI GLEX, sounds familiar so probably not needed.
No trails after lunch, but a lucky spot was my first Chilean of the trip, CC-CZU 763 about 15 miles offshore, FL320.
PR-ATH ATR72 which I said on Monday was staging through had actually been stored at LPA and left this afternoon heading SE towards Mauritania, destination unknown. Actually staging through was N402SV ATR42 of Silver Airways, seen outbound at FL200 heading for Cabo Verde, previously at Francazal and presumably heading for the airline’s base at Fort Lauderdale.
LPA yielded nothing. A “heavy”, looked like a 777 or 330, landed around 10.30 not on any radar screen, military?

No trails today but nothing much of interest within range.
Caught up with three ATR72s into LPA, EC-MIY CanaryFly, EC-MSK Binter and EC-MZJ Air Europa Express but missed a fourth, the new RAM CN-COJ (saw the others on my last trip). 9H-LOV was a scrape, have now seen all four operating for Binter.

No trails today. The CA907 Air China 789 was B-7879, went by about 10 miles offshore at FL350 but could not spot it looking into the sun.
Just one frame into LPA today, OY-JZK 738 of Jet Time. Missed it when it was with Turkish and Sun Express.
(Edit) EC-JML Cessna U.206G just went overhead.

Still no trails. Two Air Europa frames inbound LPA within 10 minutes, EC-MSM ATR72 and EC-MNS 788, but that’s it.
TAP are using their new 339s on South American routes, CS-TUB/C/D/F noted so far. Usually too far west, the other side of Tenerife, but TUF was within spotting range today, missed it.
Took a trip on local buses to Puerto de Mogan, about 25 miles down the coast. They don’t half shift on the narrow winding roads, but there is a problem with cyclists - they are everywhere! Apparently professionals and keen amateurs come here to train in the off season, but the traffic has great difficulty in overtaking them as they ride in groups, not always in single file.
(Edit) JTG260 Jet Time came in at 18.15 from Cabo Verde, all white, no reg showing on any radar. New acquisition?
(new edit, 23.35) B-3999 737 is just going by, can’t be bothered to get out of bed to look for it.

Hi Jerry, according to FR24 playback JTG260 was OY-JZK and the time matches perfectly. Ex TC-SBF, registered as OY in December

As usual Tuesday was quiet, no trails and just one frame made into LPA, EC-MMX 788 Air Europa. 3 made this trip, still need 4.
Needed Air Europa 738 EC-MVY due in ar 21.40, but we will be watching a show.

The less said about today the better. Just one scrape, YL-LCV 321 operating for Novair. Missed two needed frames into LPA, PH-HXO 738 Transavia (turned in too early) and EC-JPF 330 Air Europa (was playing mini golf).

First the good news, for the first time this trip a Chilean 787 went overhead, CC-BGK. Now the bad news, I didn’t need it! I only have 4 of their 21, saw this one while I was in Reims in 2017.
And the needed Air China 789 B-1466 went much further west this morning, well out of range.
Nothing much scheduled into LPA, expecting another blank day.
(much later) The minigolf had finished today when EC-JPF 330 Air Europa came in today, so missing it yesterday did not matter!

Carnival today, lots going on in the hotel so concentrated on holiday rather than spotting. Missed at least 3 frames, LV-GKO 330 Argentina’s, OK-TSR 738 Travel Service and OE-LOA 320 Laudamotion but did at least make my last Air Europa 330 EC-MAJ.
An interesting visitor was UR-CGW AN-12 of Ukraine Air Alliance which arrived from St Johns, Newfoundland. Don’t have my Soviet spreadsheet with me but sounds familiar so probably not needed.

The Sahara sands are back, blotting out overflights and the LPA approach. Have already missed CS-TUB/D TAP 339s and will not see the Vueling 320neo EC-NAF which is currently (09.45) on finals. Only the second one noted this trip.
Am resigned to a blank day.
(much later) The haze cleared sufficiently for me to make D-ASEE 320 Sundair (frame) and HB-JXM 320 easyJet (scrape), but no trails, nothing seen OTT.
A puzzle regarding the Ukrainian AN12. On arrival yesterday it was reported as UR-CGW, but on departure this afternoon to La Palma it was reported as UR-CGV.I know the former is white and the latter dark blue, but it was head on when I saw it on arrival. Which was it, or indeed was it both?

Post by graham on Mar 24, 2019 10:15:27 GMT
Hi Jerry
FR24 replay confirms your departing An-12 yesterday was UR-CGV, departed LPA at 1427 GMT en route for SPC
Just about to do a rerun for the arrival the day before
OK, inbound An-12 on 22/3/19 was UR-CGW at approx 1725 GMT routing from YYT

Thanks Graham, was suspicious because I could find no trace of UR-CGW leaving or UR-CGV arriving.
Last full day, still no trails and the CA907 789 B-1469 was far too far west. Just one frame OK-TSS 738 Travel Service and one scrape D-ABNK 320 Eurowings. Clouded over this afternoon, rain forecast for tomorrow but who cares, we are going home!

After 20 days of almost wall to wall sunshine, cloud and light rain today, but who cares, we are going home!
Busy at LPA, read off many previously only seen OTT but only 2 frames, G-JZBS my last Jet2 738 and the grounded Smartwings 738MAX OK-SWC, didn’t need the 3 Norwegians EI-FYA and SE-RTA/C. 2 CN235s, a white CASA212 and 2 F-16s on the military side but not read off. Had a window seat and expected to taxi past the storage area but for the first time in 3 weeks they were taking off to the south and I was on the wrong side again!
Back to LGW on G-TCDZ 321, legroom seemed much better than on G-NIKO going out. On time landing, but the air bridge failed, sat on the plane for 40 minutes before they brought steps to disembark. Two frames made, G-UZMD 321 easyJet and N1PG Gulf 650.
And so ends another non-spotting trip! Grounding the 738MAX made quite a difference, and the South American flights were not kind, only the not needed Brazilians were regularly in range.
