After a rainy start it has now stopped and myself Bill and Graham have settled on the crowd line behind the KC10. Come along and say hi if your passing hi, I did have a walk that way but no chance of a green hat, all hats were that wet you could not tell colours. Also saw no one with white trainers, tea shirt and shorts... gave up at 1400 and headed home. regards, dave...

Hi folks
I’ve read a lot of negativity on other forums about this years RIAT so here are a few of my thoughts on what proved to be a completely stress free visit. Firstly, I know we can’t control the weather and we got lucky by deciding to go on the Saturday. IIRC 1987 was a real stinker but we managed to find cover in a beer tent and, before the days of H&S, they still put on a good flying display. 2008 was also very bad – I was there on the Friday for the Review and, despite some very heavy downpours that led to the cancellation of the weekend show, much of the flying was accomplished so I was well happy.
Over the years, I’ve approached Fairford from every colour coded route and by far the best is the brown route coming up from junction 17 of the M4. Even if you’re travelling from London I would strongly recommend continuing the extra few miles to junction 17. This route is via Malmesbury and the B4040, Minety, Ashton Keynes, Cotswold Water Park and Down Ampney (all well signposted). Just before Meysey Hampton you may hit a small queue coming in from the A417 to the north but with the right turn for the airfield the traffic is constantly moving and within 5 minutes we’re parked up on concrete in the Green Zone. I always leave Chippenham bang on 7am and this route takes 45 minutes door to door. Arriving at the green entry gate just before 8am, there were no queues as the early morning rush had cleared.
I’m not a photographer and don’t feel the need to be right at the front of the crowdline. Despite the hospitality enclosures, I feel there is ample space along the crownline and usually stand or sit quite a few yards back from the crowds but still in a position to see all the flying. A slow walk through the static to the eastern end near the Vintage Village to where we watch the start of the flying. During the course of the day we’ll work our way back towards the western end.
I thought the static layout was ok but I’m not too bothered about ice cream vans and tat stalls. My grandson could have spent the entire day in the Techno Zone! Personally I thought Saturdays flying display was top notch and up there with some of the best years. My key to ending a good day out is to leave early and yesterday we left just after the Reds/PDF Concorde flypast. Yes I missed the Su27 display but I was home in 40 minutes and well satisfied. I generally do the same at Yeovilton and miss the Commando display but get home stress free.
Cheers Keith

RIAT has recognised the frustration of those of us who attended on the Friday for the last 2 years, with headline flypasts cancelled by the weather. They will be giving £5 discount on Friday next year.

EC-400 is c/n 056 and is going to be ZM421 eventually. It was also present in 2018. Which day did you visit, I have a full list of civil for Saturday, including north side.

hi Graham, thanks for the c/n, understand its a test reg... I was there Friday unfortunately, with the rain etc not even sure of the types... thanks, regards, dave... Only civil visitors we noted in the monsoon on the far side on Friday were M-OT OR, G-OWTN, Citation D-COBI and Saab's Gulfstream 550 SE-RKL if that helps.
