Interesting.indeed. From a Southampton perspective, a more ‘regional ‘ sized airliner will be essential to fit existing runway and stand dimensions. Larger A320 / B737 have been used on occasion, but are limited in fuel / pax uplifts in order to achieve the “carrier-deck” operations demanded of aircrews.
An A220 sounds good on paper - with the FlyBe Embraers coming to the end of their leases, the new red Virgin brand won’t look as striking if applied to the ageing Dash 8 Deltas.
Let’s hope that SOU survives the latest changes to its principal carrier.
edit; and now with Swiss’ engine issues in their (now grounded) A220 fleet, it may be some time before any upgrade if the industry rumours are correct...
