A great opportunity via a work trip to get a look at Toronto and drive up to Ottawa for a conference. As with most plans it did not survive first contact as thanks to a broken cockpit window my Westjet steed was stuck in Canada and I was stuck at Gatwick for 25 hours. I eventually got away on 6th October having spent the day at Gatwick. It then meant I had a 5 hours drive up to Ottawa and I was to miss out on all the stuff I have planned for that Sunday.
On Westjet it is bring your own IFE, a memo I must have missed! So if you fly with them take an i-pad and headphones as you can download movies via their in flight app (which you must download before you go) to amuse yourself. Contemplating my epic drive ahead of me I took advantage of the chance to get some sleep.
Arrival in Toronto YYZ was smooth, you walk through a glass corridor with good airside views before reaching a hall full of electronic passport machines. This was a bit fiddly but it prints out a ticket that you show to get into the country. Hire cars are picked up and returned in the multi storey cap park opposite the terminal, so no shuttle bus rides. All very efficient. It was still light so a quick circuit of the field produced a fair few. The it was to Derry Road East to grab a Canuck on a pole. It was less than a mile away and could be on my route. (43.711694, -79.633666) There is a car park just past it and you could walk back to photograph it if you want.
Next was Buttonville airfield. The best view I found was on the opposite site here 43.858690, -79.370096. You could look across to the ramp and read most things off. From the airport side it is a wall of buildings between you and the ramp with few views. There does appear to be a fenced in "beer garden" but it was locked up when I got there. Google Earth has loads of stuff outside on the far side which was not the case when I was there. There were a couple of floats planes that's all. The main ramp was well populated though.
Next was Markham which was a waste of time. It looks interesting on Google Earth but the entrance gate 43.932601, -79.273557 was padlocked and nothing can be seen from outside. It you can arrange a time when they are open it looks like it will be worth a visit.
Then it was onwards to Ottawa, once I got on the 401 my satnav told me to turn right after TWO HUNDRED AND TWELVE MILES! Missing out Trenton and three sites in Kingston (T-6, F-86 and Canuck) as it was now dark. A crash (not me) and motorway closure delayed me more and I arrived at my hotel at midnight (5 a.m. UK time). Tired but glad of the sleep on the Westjet flight out here.
I shall post the rest of the journey and logs later.
Cheers
Bob
