Work finally starts on Crete's new airport

Anyone who has flown into or out of Heraklion's Kazantzakis International Airport will have a tale of woe to tell, especially in the summer months; massive check in queues that snake through the terminal doors and out into the coach park, way too few check in desks, queues for check in, then bag x-ray and then personal security check, flights being called in Greek but often, not in English, rancid toilets, hardly anywhere to sit and franchised snack bars where a can of coke and a small piece of cake will set you back six or seven quid.

But, at last, work has started on the new international airport at Kastelli, some 25kms south of Hersonissos, on the site of the existing Hellenic AF base
