Have recently be playing around with diff aerial setups for my SBS I've finally found away of locating it in the loft. The current aerial is a basic magmount attached to an old buscuit tin at the highest part of the loft. Range is pretty good and I now have the sbs pc running on a shelf in a wardrobe while viewing the output via the Zoom app on an ipad. Moving on from this as now I know the setup works I've just ordered a new designed for purpose aerial off of Broadsword Ariels. Can anyone advise on the position and best way to attach this aerial in the loft as this isn't a mag mount

Aerial arrived and installed in the loft and what a vast improvement over the out of the box aerial. Bearing in mind I'm in a bit of a dip in Farnborough I was impressed it was picking up a a bizjet at 41k about 50 miles off the coast of Hull!

Jeff , interested to see that you aerial in loft project worked out well . I have considered trying this but felt that the received signal would be reduced too much . So could now be a 'lock down' project . Thanks for information . Chrisj

Smudger , pre my house move a couple of years back , I lived in a bungalow so no problem clearing the building height ! BUT , I used the supplied mag mount , mounted on a Roses sweet tin lid for a ground plane . This was mounted a-top my mast which was made from two lengths of plastic waste pipe of about two inches diameter ( do not do metric- old school !) . Each pipe length was a about fifteen feet long . As this moved a bit in any breeze I put a couple of lengths of wood down the centre and four guy ropes ran from the top to convenient places on the fence and shed . A fence post held the mast in place as well as the fence . I can not recall the cable type at the moment but it was very low loss , quite thick and came from a chap at Holsworthy along with the connectors . This gave cover well into France from home near Chivenor and up to just south of Manchester despite a run of hills to my north . Bit of a hash but did the job . Later I replaced the ant. with one from Moonraker and things got better . Been waiting for roof replacement at present location and then will set up again . Just shows that you do not have to spend a lot ! Chrisj

Hi All , just to add to my last . I have now dug out some cable details for anyone that might be interested ?? Cable is WESTFLEX 103 also known as W103 . It requires special N plugs and PL259s to fit both cable and the BNC connections of the SBS box . Supplier details were :- WH WESTLAKE ELECTRONICS , WEST PARK , CLAWTON , HOLSWORTHY , DEVON EX22 6QN . Website www.whwestlake.co.uk , email whwestlake@yahoo.co.uk and phone 01409-253758 . These details are a few years old and may well of changed so you may have to do a bit of googling about ! May help someone . The cable is a bit on the thick side because it is in effect a 'near' waveguide . This is because of the high frequencies involved and hence the lower loss of signal . ( Not going into it further 'cause my RADAR theory is deep in the old grey cells of long ago !) chrisj

Chris, are you still in that neck of the woods? It's one of our favourite places to visit, we often stay in a cottage at Landkey, just outside Barnstaple and when there, usually chuck the dogs in the car every day for a walk at either Braunton Burrows or along Saunton Sands. Of course, we drive past the old base at Chivenor and it always rekindles memories for me of attending shows there in 1970, 1972 and 1984. My logs on PlaneBase tell me I made well over 40 Hunters between the 1970 and 1972 shows and around 20 Hawks at the 1984 one.
We were up in the area last November, out of curiosity I drove onto the old site just to see what was there and rather fortuitously found "GT Ales" on the trading estate who relieved me of a few quid for some of their bottles.
I also remember a couple of years ago, taking a back road up in that area and finding a Hunter in someone's garden
