Gents, in an effort to cut down on space and also to make the entire home page here visible without having to scroll down, on the larger forums such as UK/Worldwide GA & Biz, military, and a couple of others, we have listed the various sub forums beneath the main heading, all you do is click on whichever airfield you wish to view or contribute to. From this point in time, if anyone wants to add a new thread to any of these sub forums, could you please use the new feature, rather then post on the individual sub forums which are still listed? Jeff and I are working on how to transfer the existing posts across to the new format so the less we have to do the better, thanks to all.

Gents, Jeff and I reckon we have things sorted out. Many of you have been good enough to convey your thoughts about the AFA website and all are saying they like it and the layout but were just a bit concerned at how large the home page is and how much scrolling it takes to see everything. With that in mind, we will introduce the "hidden forums" theme which is already active on some of the main forums here, namely UK/Worldwide GA & BiZ, UK civil aviation and UK/Worldwide military.
There's is a trade off unfortunately which we can't avoid - by using the hidden forums, unless you specify in your post title which airfield you are talking about, it will not show up. For example, Tony has already posted about the B737 BBJ on the UK/Worldwide GA & Biz forum but it doesn't show which airfield he is referring to, so the trade off is that you must please include the airfield in your post title, otherwise anyone who is interested in reading your post would need to click on every "hidden" forum until he finds your post.
Jeff and I will start to copy everything across over the weekend but it'll be a long job so bear with us, your stuff is safe. So, as with the previous message here, can you all please start to use the new "hidden" forums on these three main forums right away?
Thanks for your feedback and patience, it'll all look great when it's done

Well, thanks to Jeff's stirling efforts, most of it is already done!
Just so you all know, although the sub forums on the UK Civil, UK/Worldwide Mil and UK/Worldwide GA/Biz are hidden and accessible via clicking on whichever airfield you want, if you click on ...
"News, fleets, deliveries, anything else" - on the UK Civil forum "All UK and Worldwide Military aviation" on the UK/Worlwide military aviation forum "Please seect the airfield you wish to view or contribute to" on the UK/Worldwise GA & Biz forum..............
.............it will show all the sub forums and as usual, the traffic lights will indicate which posts are new.

Messy, How about dividing the 'main page' Civil/military, then sub divisions, within the 2 main headers. Persoanlly I am civil orientated, so I have to wade throught the 'military' sections to get to where I want. Purely on my preferences
Civil--------------------------Military . . . .G.A -------- BIZ ------------ COMMERCIAL
G.A. , breakdown into U.K. / worldwide
U.K. breakdown into airfields / Worldwide, name your airfield & post.
BIZ breakdown into U.K., Worldwide (same as G.A)
Commercial same as above. ________________________________
MILITARY I know nothing about but similar to civil subdivisions must be a good start.
My personal opinion is you are trying to please all the people all the time & it don't/won't work. You are also trying to please all those people with the minimum of effort FOR THEM. Mouse clicks are not really 'an effort' so subdivide (what I call) logically, and make the buggers (me included) exercise that right index finger. Seriously it's a good & refreshing effort on the part of you guys. Bets (that should of course be BEST) of luck guys. Have fun Terry

Has the space section been removed completely?

Well, the whole idea of the forum is for people to find what they want as quickly as possible. I agree that you can't please all the people all the time and the the only criticism we have had ( and remember that we asked for ideas and criticism good or bad when we started here)is that the home page is huge and takes a lot of scrolling down to find what you are looking for. The new FAB forum uses a similar idea and it looks good and saves a load of space. In reality, nothing has really changed - all the sub forums are there, you just need to click on the specific one you want to open it.
We have civil and military buffs on here, so whichever way we organised the forum, we potentially might upset someone. In the old format, civil was before military and it still is. "London's airports" are further down, which is where they have always been. If the general consensus is that "London's airports" should be higher up the ladder, then we can do that with a mouse click ( well, almost..)and would be happy to do so.
I belong to several online forums over which I have no say in how they are organised - they change sometimes, and my initial thoughts are often, "that's changed, I'll never get used to it" but in reality, I do after using it for a day or two. A forum should always evolve, we should consider ways to make it better and easier to use and we honestly believe that we have done that with this upgrade and reshuffle. A couple of very low traffic sub forums have gone, to be honest, with just a couple of threads and five posts in three months, they didn't warrant the space but if anyonefeels strongly about their removal, then happy to reinstate but all I'd say is " please use them or lose them".
Just have a play around with the new look site please and become familiar with it, the only one main difference is as said that the sub forums on some topics are now "hidden" but they can be accessed by clicking on their names, or you can view the page as it used to look, i.e. with the full line up of sub forums, by clicking on the wordage immediately beneath the main forum title, as described above, which will show the traffic lights as usual.
It's human nature to raise concerns when you don't like something, but alternatively, few bother to comment when they're happy with something. Please give us a chance here gents, we can fine tune and tweak where necessary, thanks

OK, gents, I have adjusted the wording on each of the four "condensed" forums - you have a choice, either click where it says "HERE" to view the sub forum in its old format complete with traffic lights, or simply select and click on the specific sub forum you want from the list below. That gives us all the best of both worlds.

Gents, thanks once again to a great effort from Jeff, the forum rejig is pretty much completed. The objective was to reduce the number of visible sub forums without actually losing anything, which is what we have done. We have gone from about 90 sub forums to 20, which means the home page is way less cluttered and means you can now scroll to the bottom very quickly. All that has gone is the Mode S logs sub forum which we will happily reinstate when Terry makes his next jaunt to India and the space exploration sub forum which in over two months received two threads and a total of five posts.
Everything else is there, whatever anyone has contributed is now safely on the rejigged sub forums. Just to reiterate, you can still view all the sub forums in their previous layout by clicking on the "click HERE" link at the top of each main forum and as before, this will show the red/green traffic lights so you know what has been added since you last looked. If you don't wish to view all the sub forums in that specific group, just click on the airfield you wish to view or add to.
Thank you for bearing with us whilst we did this, we think it is much better, more logical, uses way less space and is simpler to use. I had visions of it taking an era but Jeff has obviously got the knack!!
EDIT - last minute decision to re-include the "space exploration" sub forum, hope that keeps you happy kyleg...;0)

One last thing chaps, as was mentioned yesterday, can anyone who posts a log, report or photos for any specific location please include that location in their post title? With the new look format, if someone for example posts a log from Kemble, if they don't include the airfield name, it will just show up as "log" or "report" as far as "latest post" is concerned. People would then have to click to view the entire UK GA/Biz forum and click on every airfield until they found out which field it was.
As an example, Tony posted about a B737 on the UK GA/Biz forum but he titled it as just "B737 BBJ" so it showed on the "last post" facility as exactly that, so no one knew which airfield it was from. Not criticising you Tony, just using it as an example, thanks

I didn't realise that censorship was available on this site, the jokes section mentions keeping it clean not 'taste' plus I was under the impression we were all grown up here and could make up our own minds. Just to remind you I am noted for posting 'bad taste' jokes.

I haven't seen the joke Terry, so I have no idea what the content was, we aren't into "censorship" here at all, we want this to be an open and pleasant place for all to be and use, considering the constraints we all endured on the old forum. But we are all aviation enthusiasts here and a hundred and fifty people have met their untimely end in this disaster, regardless of how or why it happened. I wouldn't find that a cause or a subject for a poor taste joke I'm afraid.
In this case for "keep it clean" read "keep it tasteful" I'm afraid. Yes, we can all make our own minds up, but we'd have to read it first to determine that and if it upsets anyone, that would be too much.
