Road trip 3rd Sept - Lincolnshire and East Anglia...

Hi Guys,

Myself, Dean (ITFC) and Kevin decided to take a trip around some of our military fields in East Anglia. We were a bit undecided whether to include Marham but having read some of the reports about the traffic and law enforcement plus the fact that the F-35’s were being reported as arriving after dark, we decided to by-pass. 

However, I certainly set a personal record of the number of ‘locations’ visited in one day, or spotting session... The log below (courtesy of Deano) is not in sequence but for those who are interested we visited in the following order; Stansted, Barkston Heath, Cranwell, Coningsby,  Woodham Spa, Tattershall, Metheringham, Waddington, Cranwell, Barkston Heath, Sibson, Connington/Holme, Chatteris, Mildenhall, Beck Row and Lakenheath... I left Deepcut at 5am, picked up the guys at Stansted at 6.30 and finally walked into the house at 22.15 with over 400 miles on the clock... Nevertheless was great day out heavily weighted towards military...

We had to do a lot of walking, not just the usual walk along Brandon Road but we actually went up on the Heath to gain a view down and across the field, first time we’d been up there... We could only see 11 of the visiting Aviano machines.

A great and interesting log Guys. I first saw the Hunter XE606 at Chivenor back in August 73. There used to be a Hunter parked in a field on the left as you drive south from Woodhall Spa towards Coningsby but maybe it's gone now? I'm surprised what you reported for Metheringham?

I take it that the above is a Planebase report. Hate the layout - aircraft type is truncated.

I trust that the user is able to amend the incorrect aircraft type entries for what is shown as Boeing 707!! KC-135/RC-135s have nothing whatever to do with the airliner. They were a completely separate (and earlier) derivative of the Boeing 367-80. In fact the three RAF RC-135W Rivet Joints are conversions of final batch (FY64) USAF KC-135Rs.

Hi Keith,

Metheringham is a museum, which was closed to public access, so we could only see the Dakota... I’d been before but Deano hadn’t...

There’s a couple of frames there and well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Hello Bob,

Not Planebase mate, but ADU. They are quite similar in many respects.

With regards to the specifics of a particular aircraft type and/or its derivative, ADU does give these additional details. Unfortunately, some details are Condensed and lost in the migration from an electronic (screen) report to the printed form (as used in my post), but the full details are there, trust me. So there is no need to correct anything.

Hi Bill

I did wonder why you never reported the other frames at Metheringham but now understand as it was shut. If you or anyone else is into military history and you are in the Coningsby area, a trip to the Petwood hotel in Woodhall Spa is well worth a visit. This was the officers mess for the Dambusters in WW2 and the bar and adjacent rooms are full of authentic 617 Sqn memorabilia. They even had an original bouncing bomb in the car park to the front of the hotel - I assume it's still there.
