This was the year when I picked up the bins and note book in earnest after a break of many years. During those years, I still attended shows but didn't spot on a daily basis. It was a great year, it felt exciting getting back into daily spotting and I also became mates with Jeff and Bill in this year. My log from home for this day wasn't very exciting though, but here it is

I'll start off with 11th August 1999. This was solar eclipse day. When, if you were in Cornwall, you would have got the full benefit and experienced 'night during day'. However, as I recall, anyone who made that trip paid for it with a wet day but still had daytime darkness. In my own locale of Aldershot, we had about 97%, not enough for complete darkness but the sky did mellow and it did cool down. This day has to be my best ever for spotting from home. Here goes: PA28 G-BRDG, BOOF, JANT, CLAC ,BEEU, BEOH, BAZU, LTFB, BXNH, BPKM. S360 *G-CEAL (i/b FAB) PA31 G-BLFZ, OJIL, *PZIZ, PZAZ, *MRMR PA23 G-BFBB AS355 G-LENI B 222 G-NOIR Robin G-BGTP, GEEP ATP G-CORP (Bae 'hack' at the time) Be76 G-WACI, WACJ RC112/4 G-BDFW, GRIF PA30 G-ATXD Chally C-GBKB (FAB traffic) AA5 G-MILY
Bo209 G-AZRA Stearman G-AZLE Let410 *C5-LET Ce172 G-BHVR, SEXI, BKLO, ROUP Ce177 G-AYSY, BFIV Ce560 G-CZAR (FAB traffic)
Gulf 4 VP-BUS ( " " ) TB20 *G-TANS J3 Cub G-BBLH AA1 *G-BDNW PA24 G-BRXW Be200 G-FRYI, BPPM Ce150 G-AVHM, BPIO B206 G-JWLS Ce303 *G-INDC S76 G-HARH Mo20 G-BJHB Micros *G-MYEP, *MWHT A total of 54 aircraft would represent an excellent non fly-in day at Popham and a reasonable fly-in day there. Of that 54 aircraft, 9 were new to me at that time.

Hi Dave
I remember XM144 LIGHTNING F.1A c/n 95040 very well - it used to be a regular performer at UK airshows in the late 60's/early 70's along with I think it was XM139 - I believe both were attached to the Leuchars Target Facilities Flight at the time.
