Well on the 2nd January 1970 I started my career in the travel business... One that lasted 47 years.
On that day I joined a tour operator called Blue Sky/Blue Cars.... They don’t exist nowadays but I was the office boy in the London office, top of Shaftesbury Avenue, next door to the Shaftesbury theatre where, at the time, ‘Hair’ was in full flight - Every morning and evening the sights that I saw coming and going from that place would make nun blush... And at the tender age of 15 it was quite an eye opener...
Anyway, my introduction to the travel industry was amazing... The pay wasn’t great but the perks (even as a office boy) were fantastic. Once I’d established myself it became common practice that on a Thursday afternoon one of the boys in Ops would come through and ask if anyone fancied going away for the weekend. This would be typically when they would decide what seats were left available and, if not used by staff, would go to waste...
So on 29th September 1970 Ibiza was the destination of choice. Three of us charged off for the weekend on Caledonian BAC 1-11 G-AWWX.
Noted at Ibiza we’re;
D-ABAW Caravelle LTU D-ABAV Caravelle LTU EC-BFV F-27 Friendship Spantax EC-BPJ F-27 Friendship Spantax EC-AMR Convair 440 Iberia EC-AUH D.C.-3 TASSA N77JN Lear Jet 24 HB-GOZ Baron.
We flew back on G-AXLN BAC 1-11 British Midland...
