We already know about the tactical Mode S codes used by the likes of AAC Apaches, USN P8s etc making them impossible to identify unless confirmed visually, but another worrying trend may be starting. During the last week 2 C17s have arrived at Ramstein using the Mode S codes of 55-5151 (a Hawaii based machine) and 97-0046. On landing however these were visually confirmed as 05-5141 (not even a Hawaii one) & 07-7178 respectively. The Mode S codes known for these 4 are not even close to each other which would appear to rule out simple box miscoding. Am keeping an eye with my Ramstein local to see if there are any more.

There's one more for the C-17s, Dave.
03-3119 (MS ANG) and 03-3126 (305AMW) both use the hex code AE119C. This pair and 05-5151/05-5141 have been like this for many years, whereas 07-7178 only started using the wrong code in November 2020. It is thought that it is down to swapping of one transponder box at unit level maintenance. Depot level maintenance doesn't seem to alter them.
Then, of course, there is the classic of the USMC KC-130J 165810 (currently with Marshalls at Cambridge) which was showing up as the Arizona ANG KC-135R 57-1419 (now on maintenance at OC-ALC)!!
Just to confuse matters, the Beale based KC-135R 61-0280 freely swaps between using its correct hex of AE026F and that of the March based 63-8012 (AE025F). This was very noticeable when 63-8012 was in OC-ALC recently.
Without checking, I think that the last two of the above examples are down to finger trouble on one digit (or inverting two digits) when recoding a box. Remember that the box code is always entered in octal and not hexadecimal.

The type change was another incident,that the Americans did get told off about (not that they would care) over the UK at WOD/CPT. It was mentioned in one of the Air Force 1 satellite documentaries,
As the"SAM" ..Gulfstream (as Filed..not 29000 OR 28000) routed down G1 STU-CPT-DVR ,a Manchester departed B757 asked London ATC if that was AF1 in front of him crossing right to left (as most folk still think of the B747's as AF1).
The controller said no it was a GLF5 (I was there) ...oh thats strange it is a B747,flight plan was rechecked
The next day Graham Luxton came into work (living in Reading and confirmed it was a B747)
The documentary said they were ready to abort the Bush "Thanks giving Surprise flight" if the cover appeared completly blown (which in theory visually it was )
