I dropped my daughter and her friends off at Thorpe Park yesterday just before 10am and had to pick them up at about 6.30pm. In between, the time was mine...! I had intended to visit some of the Essex fields I hadn't been to in a long while, but the weather was better to the west so I had a quick change of plan...
First visit was a very quick stop at Heathrow- 6 new and 6 "upgraded" having previously only seen them as overflights!

Next up was Tewkesbury where I had heard about 11 Westland W.30s stored. Typically and annoyingly, I could only see 10 !
From the colour scheme, I believe I saw the 3 American examples (all seen before). But I only saw 7 of the supposed 8 Indian examples. If anyone can help with which one was missing that would be much appreciated!!
All registrations taken from a Scramble article - no external markings carried.

Then I cut across country to Enstone. I hadn't been for a few years, so had been looking forward to this. As always, a very friendly field. In return for a charitable donation, access to the main hangar was granted. Some but not all of the other hangars were open, so still need to go back... But still made 13 !

(Unfortunately G-UHGB that I also wanted to see was away up north- one for next time!)
Then I rushed down the M40 and M25 and miraculously made it to Thorpe Park for 6.30. Even more miraculously, my daughter and friends came out on time too! A successful day- a few photos to follow!

Thanks Howard- that’s great and confirms that one!
And thank you Bob- the only report I can find on that site is dated Sunday 28th June 2020! Which, along with Scramble, is what I used to find them, but the report is a year old- unless you’ve found a newer one…?
Thanks again

Thanks Graham - there are 2 different lists.. one that shows G-BLTY and one that shows VT-EKG (same aircraft, not sure which its last registration was!) Unfortunately, either way, its still 11 listed and I only saw 10 !
Thanks though!

lastly, the W.30s at Tewkesbury. Photos from my phone so haven't come out very well. The first shot shows 4 (all believed to be VT-) The second shot just about shows 6 - the 3 red should be the US registered. The "missing" 7th could have been tucked in there too, but it didn't appear so. IMG_5919 by Phil M, on Flickr IMG_5920 by Phil M, on Flickr

Is it worth writing / emailing the owner to ask if someone could be allowed to identify and publish the identities of those visible to stop anyone tempted to go nosing around?

Thanks Bob- I could only be sure of there being 10 outside (2 to the right of the US ones) but you could well be right, there may well be another tucked to the right.
Good luck with your request- if you are successfu, is there any chance you could make a note as to which is which from my photos, so I can know which 10 I saw?! That would be much appreciated!
I did also consider getting in touch for a future visit- when we are all back to normality, perhaps an AFA group can try for a Staverton/ Tewkesbury visit/tour- perhaps a charitable donation might pave the way?
Cheers-good luck! Phil

Hi Phil, Finger crossed that I get a reply- never the less, will still pay a visit even without a reply, hopefully there is someone around whom I can ask and get the nod, as far as I am aware there are no marking on the choppers and you need to get into or look into the cabs to get serial's etc- but we will see. Regarding a tour of Staverton- that would be a great shout- there was a guy who did tours around the hangars pre-covid- I'm sure that Graham, Bill and Jeff did an editorial visit - but I maybe wrong. Regarding next week- the plan is now my electrician is coming on Monday, and I have a pass out from my beloved- is Kemble, Oaksey, Aston Down,Over Over, Staverton, Tewkesbury, Bidford and BHX- then home for the match -well thats the plan anyway- Bob

Hi Bob, indeed , Bill arranged a couple of hanger tours at Staverton, must have been around three years ago now, if I recall, the chap who very kindly showed us around was Keith and I think we chucked a tenner in the charidee box each.
EDIT - just checked and we did two hanger tours within a month, 18 October 2018 and then 15 November 2018. Despite the second tour being just a month later, I still made an additional dozen or so frames so it does indeed show what lurks inside closed doors at Staverton.

Sounds good Bob. Yes, I read on Scramble or Oxford group that someone got around last year and found all construction plates- hopefully you can do the same! And no- there are no external marking carried on any.

Yes Staverton used to allow the tours- hopefully soon they may continue and we could all get on one.

Hi Phil, Re the Staverton tours, I emailed the chap (Keith), who used to organise things, last week but to this point I’ve not received any response. The last time I spoke to him (my last tour) about 2 years ago, he said that a new GM had joined the airport and one of the first things he did was to suspend the Hangar tours… If I get a response I’ll let everyone know but I suspect they may have stopped, permanently. Love your reports mate and you’ve definitely sparked my interest for a visit to Tewkesbury. I missed all the Indian’s when they were down near Gatwick… Anyway, keep the reports coming mate. Bill

Actually bumped into Keith at the Air Britain Fly In at Turweston a couple of weeks ago and asked him about the Staverton tours. He said they are still suspended but there is now a new GM (female) in place so maybe things will change going forward.
