We have just come back from six nights at the Branscombe Airfield campsite. The strip has two hangars, one with four residents and a smaller maintenance hangar containing two aircraft being worked on and two dismantled. I’m not going to give details as I don’t wish to upset the people who work in the hangars or the campsite owners, who are all lovely people. Nothing moved while we were there as the weather was not great but we had one visitor on the 8th, RV6 G-RVJL. When the aircraft do move, they have to taxi right through the campsite pitches which must great to see. The campsite itself is great with good facilities and very helpful, friendly owners. I chatted for ages with various people in the hangars about the aircraft and everything aviation so if you are into camping, it’s a great place to stay. I would advise against turning up to look at the airfield as access is via the campsite reception and I don’t think you would be welcome. However if you camp, access is fine and one of the aircraft owners told me that they have have an annual flyin which is next Saturday and, weather permitting, they hope to beat their record of 90 visitors. He also said that they close the runway between 12.30 and 13.00 so that campers can walk up and take a closer look at the aircraft. So if you fancy a weekend in South East Devon, you could do worse. I hope this is of interest to someone.

Hi Keith
I’ve stayed here a couple of times in the last 2 years. I agree- it’s a great little campsite, very friendly and well worth staying at. It’s always been quiet at night even when pretty full. My family loved it too, so it wasn’t just me because of the aircraft!! It’s well positioned for various visits along the south coast- only a couple of miles from the donkey sanctuary! Would love to go to the fly-in but won’t be this year…
Keith and I should both get a discount for this write-up…!
Cheers
