Hi Chris, any idea whereabouts the wreck was and what it was? - airport location maybe? If it IS at an airport, then maybe Planebase or ADU might have it listed. I've just Googled it and first hit is a Catalina out in the desert

Hi Graham , I have a couple of pages which I copied some time back , from a publication which I did not make a note of ! ( Now that is a good let out if ever there was one ) Pages are headed Middle East - Saudia Arabia and are page numbers 34 to 37 inclusive . When I was in Saudi I heard of this Cat. by the Red Sea and the publication gives :- Ras Ash Shaykh Humayd , Aqaba as location , then - A derelict PBY-5 is located on the shores of the Red Sea , it was abandoned after sustaining damage during an attack by Bedouins . Then it gives (48397) Consolidate PBY-5A last noted 22 March 1960 . I heard it was still there up to about 2004 . I think the post I am seeking gave more details of this and many others . Hope that helps if only a little . Chris

Chris, I think I recall the post. It has shots of the line of of airliners and biz at one of the airports including MD-11’s and 747SP’s Gulfstreams all stored and worse for wear. Alas, I too, can not recall where I saw it. It did inspire me to use Google Earth but then depressed me seeing over 50 F-5’s stored outside at Taif (and a single one winged ADV). Have you looked in your search history….. Bob

Thanks Graham , I knew there was a civil reg for the Cat but did not have it to hand , only the mentioned publication . I shall add that as a note . Thanks also to seaharrierfa2 . That is another post for me to find as I have not seen that one . The one I was looking for has among others , derelict Cv 240 ( or so ) in Saudi a/l colours and others such as DC3 and I think Chipmunks . I shall try the search history as you suggest . It is the age thing that one forgets these things !! Chris j

I remember one with Chipmunks and Vampires. It was Jeddah I was thinking of, if you put these co-ordinates into Google Earth you’ll see what I mean (21.7073040, 39.1308496). Must have been a random Facebook group I saw it.

Hi folks - I used to live and work in Riyadh and may be able to shed some light on a few aircraft but not wrecks in the desert. If you go on Google Earth and look up Riyadh - zoom in and you will find slap bang in the middle of downtown Riyadh - King Abdul Aziz airport. It's a bit like Northolt and was always home to the Saudi Royal family VIP jets - mostly Tristars/747 and exec jets. Also home to most of the Saudi C130s till they transferred across to PSAB in late 2001. If you zoom in on the airfield and check ot the most north easterly corner, you will see the RSAF Museum which has quite a few heavies parked outside but also a substantial number under cover too. The museum has it's own website which I can't find at present but the following link lists the aircraft present - www.aviationmuseum.eu/Blogvorm/saqr-aljazeera-aviation-museum/Don't confuse this airfield with the international airport which is on the northern outskirts of Riyadh. I don't think you'll find any W&R fodder there neither will you find any at Prince Sultan Airbase near Al Kharg. Cheers Keith

Further to Keith's post above, this is what PlaneBase says is based at Jeddah. Lots of assorted Gulfstreams on there, most of which are listed as being withdrawn.

Thanks Graham & Keith . This all started out following a plea for help from a friend of a friend . I had seen many years ago , some photos of derelict aircraft at an airfield in Saudi . These included a Convairliner in Saudi markings . I have seen these and more photos some where on the net but can not think just where . My first location when I worked there , was a Dhahran where we used shelters that surrounded the aircraft dump . Because of their security and lack of understanding anyone having an interest in old aircraft , it was not healthy to visit the dump but just about all could be seen easily . Next was Khamis where one had to travel via an international airport to get to freedom . Jeddah was used by me more often than not . All aircraft park away from the terminals . one terminal for Saudi a/l , one for others , one for annual pilgrims and a VIP/Royal terminal . All Saudair aircraft lined up in front of their terminal , often by types . From the terminal , to the right the RSAF C130s along with Saudair C130s could be seen . The royal hangar was in front and a long way off but often had a variety of their types outside . I found the Biz park one day when we landed near to it but could not see it otherwise . Outside of the terminal was the Saudair hangars along with rows of Gulfstreams and yellow Beech single engine types . Any spotting had to be careful and by eye only ! Sometimes we landed over the old airport where a 707 was among the buildings and a large road ran parallel to out approach which had several aircraft mounted on round a bouts . Riyadh had one long terminal divided into sections for domestic flight , Saudi international and others . It was usuall night when I passed through but I recall some hangars opposite the terminal with the likes of A340 and smaller types . These airfields are huge ! It once took us twenty minutes to taxi to the runway and we were the only aircraft and did not stop anywhere ! Anyway , still looking for that post so please if anyone finds it please let me know . Chris

Hi Chrisj - I've just caught up with your message about how huge Saudi airfields are. I worked at Prince Sultan Airbase (PSAB) and it's secure perimeter contained an area the size of the Isle of Wight. Transport aircraft like VC10s, Hercs and Learjets would fly over the secure perimeter at great height and then do a corkscrew decent just prior to landing. A much safer way of avoiding ground to air missiles. I guess with Dhahran being on the coast, approaches there were not so complicated? Cheers Keith

Chris j Had a look on Google, found 2 convair, one sitting next to a DC3 which is promising, the other crash landed, hope it helps

Thanks Jeff , every bit helps . I am gathering all these bits together so that I can send them to the person who requested help and then he can pick what helps him . It is a pity that Saudi is so secretive as there are lots of 'historic' aircraft and other items just discarded and waiting to rot ! Chris
