My first ever trip to this lovely airfield, it was a workday but as I had a call in Shaftesbury, I thought I'd make half an hour to see what was about. Compton Abbas has to be one of the most scenically located fields in the UK with its lofty position and sweeping views of the Dorset countryside. At 811ft above sea level, I believe it's only second to Dunkeswell at 840ft as far as grass strips are concerned, but I stand to be corrected.
I could only spare a few minutes so refrained from asking for hanger access and contented myself with a walk along the parked stuff adjacent to the car park, and then a stroll along the road so see what was visible through the hedge.

It's a great little airfield Graham with some really friendly fly-ins. I don't like going there, however, because of that really nasty blind corner as you turn right out of the airfield back on the B road to Shaftesbury. Cars come round that bend at such speed because the B road is so much quicker than the windy old A350 - it's a seriously dangerous right turn. Cheers. Keith

There are a few strips higher, but depends whether you includie unlicenced airfields. Davidstow Moor is 969ft, and there is a microlight place at Rossendale, Lancs which is well over 900ft too.
However, Compton Abbas is great - standing in the car park and watching aircraft dive out of sight, down the hill the other side of the runway can be a bit disconcerting!
