A 6 night, family holiday to Iceland over the Easter holidays offered the opportunity to make a few stops at Reykjavik and Keflavik. Also, staying at Reykjavik meant that most movements there were seen.
I also got lucky in that the USS Arlington docked whilst I was there, with its 4 CH-53s on deck.
Driving round the south east of the country I passed a few light airfields, but everything was shut away. I would like to go back in the summer months and next time visit the aviation museum at Akureyri. As this is about a 4-5 hour drive from Reykjavik I couldn’t get away with it on a family holiday!!
The trip started with an early morning start from T5 at Heathrow, where I made 5.
Heathrow 11/04/22
A6-BMD B.787 Etihad
C-GKUG A.330 Air Canada
N829AN B.787 AA
9M-MAG A.350 Malaysian
9V-SKU A.380 Singapore
Then we departed on G-NEOY A.321Neo for the 2hr 40min flight to Keflavik.
Seen over Iceland from G-NEOY was
TF-FIV B.757 Icelandair
Keflavik 11/04/22
seen at Keflavik on arrival were-
TF-BBP B.737 Bluebird
TF-FIO B.757 Icelandair
TF-ICP B.737-8Max Icelandair
TF-ICY B.737-8Max Icelandair
TF-PLB A.321Neo PLAY
G-BMRB B.757 DHL
G-JZBD B.737 Jet2
OH-LVC A.319 Finnair
On arrival, there were 7 USN P-8s plus one that arrived just behind us and a P-3 Orion, which departed shortly after our arrival.
I didn’t want to push my luck at this stage, so didn’t try and read them off, but waited until later in the week. I ended up reading off 6 P-8s but never saw the P-3 again.
We picked up the hire car and went for a drive as we couldn’t get into the hotel until 3pm. We went through the snowy hills/mountains and spent a couple of hours at Hveragerdi, where amongst other things, there is a small geothermal park with a geyser and hot springs in which you can boil an egg! Whilst there a nice overflight was spotted…
HK-5040 ATR-72 Avianca Express.
This was a Reykjavik outbound that was mentioned as an overflight of the Uk by someone on this forum.
From the Grand Reykjavik Hotel in the evening, one outbound was seen
