Unusual request. Having booked and paid for hotel accommodation in Newcastle to do some sightseeing, BA has cancelled our flights LHR -NCL-LHR. So my wife and I will be driving up. Our route will be M25, M11, A14, A1. Obviously we will need to stop for drinks and food breaks en route, and my lovely wife is happy for those stops to coincide with airfields.
I am therefore looking for recommendations of airfields with cafes along that route. I see that Sibson is about 2 hours from home, so a potential, but anyone have suggestions for me, please? thanks Phil

Phil, Quite a few airfields on your way up north but two I can think of of note are Gamston (Retford) this has a cafe and is just a short distance off the A1 and Peterbough (Conington) which again is just off the A1 but not sure if it has a cafe, but there is a flying club there. I think this would be easier than Sibson as if you have been there before you have to travel a few miles to get there. There are others but it would mean going off the A1 for a bit, so although your good lady has given you a bit of a pass out not a good idea. You also go past Leeming which is just off the A1. Hope this helps Bob

I remember calling into Stansted on the way up to Huntingdon once. Possibly Duxford as well.

Further north there are a few airfields worth stopping at. Sherburn is just off the A1 and highly recommended and friendly with a cafe. Then there is also Bagby and Teeside both of which aren’t too far from the A1.

If you haven't been there before, the Newark Air Museum at Winthorpe, just off A1/A46 junction is worth a visit and have quite a decent cafe
