Graham....it is Charlton Drove strip. Apparently the Tiger 9 use it for pre-season practice and that is why they were gathered there. One of the 9 lives on the strip.

Many thanks Graham, it's only five miles from home and I never even realised it was there. There's a pub on the main road which closed many year ago, it was originally called "The Charlton Cat" and was I believe at one time owned by Barbara Windsor. It was then bought by a retired ex Flying Squad policeman who changed the name to "The Sweeney", the pub sign featuring a police "jam sandwich", a barber's red and white pole and a meat pie. It then reverted to the Charlton Cat for a while before closing as a pub, was a tea room for a while but finally close about five years ago.
My mate has since come back to me and said he found the field on the track from the village out in to the wilds of the Plain

IIRC, there was a village called Charlton just S of Ashford (Surrey, formerly Middlesex) that was drowned when the Queen Mary Reservoir was built.
