Visited on the way home Saturday- had a cup of coffee and a scone in the Tower Cafe, there was an event occurring and the big hangar was being utilized for same- and most the occupants wer either moved out or had left- never the less I made the following five:- G-ELSR- Robin G-GPSX- Grob 115 G-JAKM- Sr22 G-LRNC- PA28 G-OBDA- DA40 The Microlight hangar was closed- but the hangar to the right was open- although I never ventured over to it- but two blue SR22's were in there and a white Cessna nose on which was next to SR22 G-JAKM. Also parked up on the grass in front of the Big hangar was a Skyranger? which had red coverings. We then got back to the car and headed home on the A41 passing Tilstock and Ternhill as we did. Happy Days Bob

Hi Bob I’ll post my full log for 3rd June on here soon, but I saw the 2 blue Cirrus in the hangar. One was N141KJ - couldn’t read the other, from photos I would guess it was G-SNDS, but that is only a guess and I was hoping someone else would confirm. The white Cessna was G-CYRL.
Cheers Phil

Bob
There are 2 blue SR22's live in that hangar. N141KJ and N191AH (both have photos on Airport data.com). As G-JAKM is ex G-SPWP I expect this is still all white, only re-regd last month. Glad you had a good weekend. Did you call at Tilstock, theye were using G-FBPS Cessna 208 over the weekend.

Graham GTF4J2M Graham, Thanks for the info- did not stop at Tilstock but there was two aircraft parked up one I knew was VANX but the C208 I was not aware- thanks for the heads up- it was a nice break albeit curtailed by the weather- but at least I got something. The front Sr22 was American registered. Ref:- G-SNDS it landed at Elstree at 15:15 yesterday afternoon so would not have been that one- suspect it could be N191AH Happy Days Bob

dave, Bet that was an experience saw lots of Beverleys x 22 when they were about - Massive aircraft. Great Days Bob hi, sat downstairs it was liking being in a church hall, and it was cold, noise, control wires rattling above us, up for about 45mins... it was a ROC Group visit, they asked "anyone like a flight," before he had finished the question the Bev was full, and all strapped in, waiting to go. as you say great days... regards, dave...

I managed to see 28 Beverleys, but Bob and I both did quite well as a number of the 47 built spent most of their operational lives based in the Middle East, Africa or Singapore. Of the 47 built, 8 were lost in service (Wikipedia says 9 but it was really only 8), 18 were scrapped at Shawbury, 7 at Bicester and 10 at Seletar. That left 4 which were initially preserved, XB261 was broken up after the closure of the Southend museum; XL149 was preserved in the Finningley collection but was found to be “in the way” when the 1977 Royal Review was to be hosted there and was unceremoniously broken up; XH124 stood outside the RAF Museum at Hendon from 1968 until scrapped in 1991 after 23 years of mindless neglect had caused it to deteriorate beyond help. The scrappings at Finningley and Hendon could so easily have been avoided if anyone in authority actually cared. That just leaves the first production Beverley XB259 as the only survivor at Fort Paul near Hull after the Museum of Army Transport in the town of Beverley closed its doors for the last time in 2003. It was initially sold to Court Line who had an idea (uncompleted) of using it for transport of engines etc. Then to North County Breweries as an attraction at Hull Paull airfield. When that also failed it was auctioned for scrap but bought by the owner of the Waterfront Hotel in Hull who passed it to the museum at Beverley, Yorks. Ironic that the only one left never saw RAF service having been retained by Blackburn Aircraft for tests. There were also 2 pre-production aircraft known as the Blackburn Universal. Both were offered for sale but with no takers they were both broken up at Brough in 1958. I have to say that the Beverley actually made the Bristol Freighter look like a sleek machine.....;0) I have definite memories of my Dad taking me to a show at Abingdon when I was only 5 or 6 and seeing a few Beverleys there as well as at other shows he took me too in the early and mid 60's. I saw ten in all.

hi, regarding the Beverleys, a mate long since gone, told me of one or two coming back to the uk he serviced and they had loads of sand, and even tools ie a lump hammer, spanners in the wing spaces...

As ever, Dave. Brilliant history lesson. I only ever saw 4, the Southend and RAF museum specimens definitely spring to mind, but sadly don’t ever recall seeing one in the air… My loss…
Obviously gonna have to get up to Hull to make myself a Beverley Ace….
