Thanks ZZ,here's my log for saturday, I must admit I didn't write down some of the residents and there were a few I need to ID as follows. I ended up making 30 frames and five scrapes so not too bad. I had seen loads of them previously at Sywell in 2015.
1. The blue scheme Emeraulde(?) in the hanger with the two Yaks 2. The three inside the Wiltshire Maintenance hanger 3. The RV (?) that seemed to be in primer behind the blue RV that the chap was working on in one of the plastic hangers as we walked back down from seeing the Yaks. I think Viv said it ended in "PP". They may well be in your list Phil, but I haven't checked yet. Great to see you, Bill, Jeff, Viv,Bobby Street Dean, Kev and the other guys whose names escape me.

I am sure many people feel that Popham was the wrong airfield for the rally and I am sure it wont be held there again. Good turnout on Friday but the organisation seemed chaotic. The weather didn't help today (Saturday) but I think some pilots will have been put off by what they may have heard. Dac I find it somewhat depressing to see a comment like this - What you may not appreciate is the incredible amount of work it has taken for this event to be staged -coming after the demise of the traditional PFA rally's that we all enjoyed for many years - it is a credit that it has happened at all. I can tell you that in the first place finding an airfield to stage the event was not exactly an easy process- there is far more than simply saying lets pick that airfield and it magically happens - many options were considered and rejected for a variety of reasons. I think some appreciation should be given to the efforts of those involved and a reflection that this is the first step to creating a rally format that is financially sustainable for the long term. Whether the future is at Popham or not - At least there should now be a rally for people to visit. Constructive comments will always be welcomed by the new organisers. Farrell1

Graham- Your Emeraude was G-BIVF- not on Friday’s list as I didn’t see in that hangar on Friday/ Your Van’s was probably G-CLPP- unfortunately not seen by me- the hangar obviously wasn’t open either day when I walked past. I would need that.
Good to see you, Jeff and Bill I’ll change the thread name to reflect todays log
See you soon

This is an aviation event where organisation is everything because bad organisation compromises safety. Therefore, wherever the rally is held , in whatever format is viable for the future the organisation must be much better. Simple as that. Good wishes for the future for everyone involved

Speaking as a mere visitor, and knowing some of the marshalls, I didn't think anything was badly organised. What was wrong about the organisation? And why was Popham "wrong" as a venue?
I'm sure that those who spent months arranging all this for our benefit and those persons who freely offered their time to assist will be saddened to hear that it was such a bad experience.

Hi Phil, Dave and Alfred, many thanks for those missing reggies, hope your lad did ok at the football ZZ!! Thanks yes- got to the final but then lost 1-0. Good effort for a tournament that was being treated as a pre-season warm-up! And 2-BELL overflew so I made that and G-POYA at Blackbushe on the way home so a good afternoon! As an enthusiast, I enjoyed Popham. Of course it wasn’t a patch on old PFA events of the past, but those days are gone and I’m grateful that there was an event to attend. And grateful to those that made it possible! As an ATCO, I didn’t see anything that looked badly organised or concerning. I’m not a pilot sadly, so cannot speak for them, but the friend that I spoke to that did fly in didn’t mention any concerns. There were a few slight inconsistencies in how rules were being applied by marshals, but nothing important. Popham as a venue is well used to having fly-ins with 100s of aircraft- I’m sure the team can work on anything they learned this year and make next year even better.

I thought it was a superb event. There can’t be many events where a few hundred enthusiasts are give largely free access to a live airfield. The Popham staff should be applauded for all their efforts.

I have no complaints apart from- not a lot of aircraft on view- it is a great location for an event. I am glad the LAA got something arranged for this year- after the Sywell cancellation. The LAA could have given the event a miss for this year, but didn't. Hopefully next year it will go ahead- the only problem being getting an airfield suitable- it would be nice to have something up in the north but again what is suitable- Blackpool is a large airfield, but maybe Church Fenton could be considered or go back to Cranfield or Leicester East or Kemble. But we will see. Happy Days Bob

I am somewhat surprised at the negativity from a few regarding this event.
It was never advertised as a like for like replacement for the usual LAA Rally at Sywell, and was clearly stated as a scaled down event, hence the change in title.
When Sywell and The LAA were unable to come to agreement over an event this year a plan B was necessary in order to hold an event for the LAA membership, we must remember that this is primarily a get together for LAA members and not solely for the benefit of the spotting community.
Very few airfields have the capacity to hold 400+ daily visitors over the weekend so finding an alternative that was willing and able to host would not have been an easy task
I went on the Saturday, and yes numbers where a little disappointing, which was hardly a surprise considering the poor weather forecast. Despite this there were visitors from Scotland, N Ireland, Wales, France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland and Austria.
I agree that geographically Popham is not the ideal location, however for me I would not have made the 200 mile trip to Sywell on Saturday with the prevailing weather, whereas a much shorter journey to Popham was worth the risk.
I saw no evidence of a lack of organisation on the ground at Popham, and felt the marshallers and staff did their usual superb job.
It is also worth noting that as a scaled down event admission price was only £10 compared to £15 at Sywell. For me it was nice to catch up with fellow AFA's and others from the hobby and to stay dry which would not have been the case 20 miles away where apparently is hosed down for an hour early afternoon.
All in all an enjoyable afternoon, maybe some people are only happy when they are moaning

I enjoyed the event, especially getting shots of the European registered aircraft. The first large hangar at the western? end was open and had a nice chat with the gentleman sat outside with his dog. I had to leave at 11.30 as i wanted to whizz around Farnborough and then family duties, but i still considered the event good value.

Graham, 43-30372 Piper J-3 C-65 Cub 11663 Private is G-AISX Also there was a Bristel Speedwing G-CJMF on the right hand side covered up just past the Workshop. It is Popham based so more than likely the reason for not being in your log. Happy days Bob

I did set off for Popham yesterday but it started to rain so I ended up at my daughters instead. Anyhow, you good folks might be interested in the Vlog below.

Just thought, I never made a note of any of the visiting flexwings as they were unreadable as they taxiied past and there was the dark coloured aircraft along the exhibition avenue that had the red star on its tail, any takers for any of them please?

Graham
The red star on tail aircraft was probably Soko J-20 marked 30146 and is G-BSXD.

hi, thanks for all the posts of Popham, i went on Sat. and enjoyed it, only one concern i came on train and the mile walk full of expectation took 20mins, but going back it was nearer 40mins! funny that, that walk from the pay-desk to the top of the car park was gruelling. Anyway the requests, one of the new small hangars had the door open and there was a ? just the bare frame, high wing, on its u/c. looked to be Auster type. G-CDPZ had a companion covered up any offers? Lastly (for now) at 1320 there was a biplane in the landing pattern, again any offers?
regards, dave...

Hi Dave, sounds like the biplane could've been the Stampe G-AXRP. Bill was talking to the chap working on that bare frame, I don't know whether it had been registered yet but Bill will know if the chap gave a reg,
