I managed to knock my Ext HD from the shelf it sits on yesterday, it hit the deck with a loud clunk and now my laptop refuses to connect to it. I've tried it with the wife's new laptop and that too will not recognise the Ext HD. I've tried a different connecting lead and it makes no difference. Fortunately, most of my photos are saved with Flickr but if they decide to hike up prices to an unaffordable level at some point in time, then I have well over 20k photos to transfer.
The Ext HD isn't rattling so I'm hoping that the actual disc hasn't fractured but is there any way in which I can access the photos stored on there if I buy a replacement Ext HD and want to copy them across?
Thanks.

Thanks Dave, they're safely stored on Flickr but it was always reassuring to know that they were also on the HD. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll have a look around and see if there's a way in which the photos on the HD can be transferred, assuming that the HD is knackered.

Graham, I had an identical problem a couple of years ago after knocking the portable HD over. I tried a local guy but no joy. My son works in IT and he used his contacts to find a company who specialise in the retrieval of data and photos from broken HD's. Apparently its not a 100% success rate and depends on the nature of the damage, however a week later a new HD arrived which was loaded with all the file and photos. Not everything was recovered but I estimate over 99% was retrieved so an excellent result for me. It wasn't cheap but I was more than happy to have virtually all my photos back on a more modern and much more compact HD If all else fails let me know and i will try and dig out the details for you Trev

Hi Trev, that's very good of you, thank you very much. I tried on another laptop again today and that too won't recognise the HD so I've a feeling this may be terminal.

Graham - like you I transfer my photos to an external hard drive to release space on the main machine. But on a belt & braces basis I transfer them to two identical external HDs so I have an immediate back up if one should go belly up (and one of my early ones did). Relatively small outlay for peace of mind.

Morning Dave I must admit that when Flickr hiked up their rates I was sorely tempted to just rely upon the HD for storage but am so glad now that I stuck with them. It's still good to have the security of a secondary back up but assuming the existing HD is now dead, the thought of transferring 20k photos to a new HD is rather daunting.

I ditched flikr last year and moved everything to a HD, luckily I only had about 4k of photos, I say luckily because you can only transfer a limited amount of photos at a time, which meant the bigger albums took some faffing of selecting photos individually and transferring bit by bit. I can't remember what the limit to the amount you can transfer out of flikr was but I'm thinking 100!! Of course I could of been doing it wrong (every possibility) lol

hi, Graham, have you considered the Photo stick? i'd got photos on a lap top plus desk top, some were duplicated, not on flikr, so when my lap top started playing up, a went for the Photo stick. It scans all photos deletes the duplicates, you can use it on more than one computer, and you can get it in different sizes... but there again if the HD is knackered, it would mean getting those on flikr back, as we know everything's going up, and then any new photos to your computer and then onto the stick...
regards, dave...

I dont think that would find photos in flikr, unless they are on the PCs HD as well

Thanks Dave, I know what you mean now, I think they will find photos on your PC regardless of where they're stored.

hi, when i first received it Christmas 2021, i downloaded pictures off lap top and desk computers all ok, so when i saw this post i remembered i had not done what photos i'd taken this year, so clicked it on but it only found about half and said there was a problem, so when i've a bit more time i will try again. Me mentioning it must have jinxed it, In the mean time my photos from this year are still safe on the card in my camera...
regards, dave...
