We flew out of T5, Heathrow early on Friday 16th September. At 2.15 in the morning, I made the mistake of looking at my phone and seeing a message from my mate saying our return flight on Monday was cancelled due the Queen's funeral. That ensured that I got no more sleep, as I tried to think of new hotel, car and flight plans (unaware at this point that we had been booked onto the same flight the next day). On meeting up and arriving at Heathrow at 5am, we decided to accept the new return booking and see what the car hire company at Vienna said and then plan from there. So an apologetic message was sent to the wife and work and then it was time to concentrate on aircraft!
9 needed at Heathrow including an Austrian Airlines - one less to see in Vienna! Also "upgraded" 4 previously only seen as overflights. I would also have needed the listed JAL- I missed this out of our aircraft window!

An on-time arrival at Vienna, a quick look round then an annoying chat with the car hire company (Sixt). They wanted to charge us nearly £200 to extend the rental by a day as it changed our "weekend rate". We tried to add an extra day as a separate booking but they insisted that would require returning the car and picking up another! So we abandoned the idea of an extra day in Slovenia and decided to spend the extra day at Vienna instead, without a car. Another quick look from the car park and then we set off...

We passed Wiener Neustadt, home of the Diamond Aircraft factory and made a Katana overflying the motorway. We would come back here on Monday.

The weather was bad as we approached Zeltweg and it was a Friday afternoon so we weren't hopeful of seeing much of the active stuff. However, the main reason for the visit was the museum which we hadn't been to since 2009 so we knew there were a few additions including a Croatian AF MiG-21.

Then it was time to head over the border into Slovenia and head for our hotel. Our route took us past Klagenfurt airport, which I knew from a previous visit is very unexciting! Our route into Slovenia was via the Wurzenpass, which on a nice day gives fantastic views. The highest point is 1057metres but today we were in the cloud! (Last time I followed a snow-plough!) The other, quicker option is a tunnel but we wanted to go this way for the experience and also because you pass the Alpine Museum in Mojstrana, Slovenia. This has a Bell 47J hanging from the ceiling next to large windows, so we were confident it could be seen even though the museum would be closed. Alpine Museum, Mojstrana, Slovenia 16/09/22

A meal in the pizza restaurant whilst a thunderstorm went on outside. Then a quick walk round the town in the rain and that was the end of day one!

Day 2- still raining! A quick drive to show my mate Lake Bohinj, a couple of photos, then back past the equally stunning Lake Bled for our first stop of the day - Lesce Bled. This is the main G.A airfield for Ljubljana but we knew most things would be shut away in this weather. However, we decided to see what was outside in case we didn't make it back (we did as it happens...) A quick ask in the office and we walked round. We arrived at Murska Sobota on Saturday afternoon just as the small air display was finishing with a Slovenian AF PC-9 - didn't read it off but still need one of these. Amazingly the rain had stopped and the wind had dropped, so whilst there was some low cloud about the first balloon event was able to go ahead. This was a pre-competition event (the competition proper started the next morning), and was a key-grab. The key was hooked onto a pole in the middle of the lake. About 40 teams launched from various sites to try and grab the key and win a small speed boat. I don't think anyone was successful but a couple got very close. Those launching at the nearby airport drifted across the motorway at a ridiculously low height- probably about 50 feet then if on the correct track they descended even lower to approach the lake. Some amazingly skilled flying and good fun to watch. ZU-HAA is a Customcraft AX7-90. OH-BTL is a Cameron but I can’t quite make out the size. I might put in my report later but I’m moving on Friday and I’ve been very busy since we came home. Appropriate that the first picture is the new world champion Stefan Zeberli of Switzerland flying EC-NOK. At Ljubljana, the BMI EMB145 F-WTAW is actually registered OE-LMD.

Thanks Graham and Keith, I'll add those types as I get chance. I've not fully researched all the balloons yet. Day 3 (Sunday 18th Sep) dawned sunny and still so it was off to Murska Sobota airfield for the morning launch. The balloons actually launched from elsewhere but were aiming to drop a target on the airfield, so conveniently they all flew to us. It got a little hectic at times - I think there were 103 competition balloons, plus about a dozen "fiesta" or "commercial" balloons which launched from the far side of the airfield. The airfield hangars were closed, but three aircraft were seen at this time. Next up was Celje. After asking in the office we were left to wander around for a couple of minutes. The young guy in charge then came to chat with us and opened up the two other hangars so we could log and take photos of everything. However there was just a small lock-up hangar and it was very obviously private, so we turned round and kept going. Heading back for the balloons now, we came to the next strip at Radenci. This was another small strip on a golf course. However, despite a sign showing an UTVA 75 and another one showing the runway across the golf course, the "hangar" was full of golf equipment and there didn't appear to be any aircraft here. So it was on to another small strip at Krapje Verzej. This was a microlight strip in between some crop fields with one big solid hangar. Once again, all was locked up with noone about, but a few were made.... Krapje Verzej 18/09/22 S5-PBI Fly Synthesis Storch S S5-PKM S5-PMR Our last attempt was Moravske Toplice. We found the strip and somebody was using it for flying his model aircraft. However there was no hangar and no aircraft here, so it was back to Murska Sobota airfield for the evening launch.

Day 4 was our last morning at the balloons. An early morning launch- again 100 or so competition balloons but only 1 (or 2?) other balloons joined them. There was nothing new seen, but it was a very strange launch, with almost exactly half of the balloons going in one direction and the other half going exactly the opposite direction! Then we left Murska Sobota. Our original plan had been to drive north into Austria but as Lesce-Bled had been all closed up on our previous visit, we decided to head 2 hours east to visit there again! Thanks Graham, the only record I could find of -FWW was as the old Premier jet.
Day 4 (Mon 19th) ended with us arriving at Vienna on the evening. We had a drive round and logged most of the bizjets, then returned the car and headed off to our recently booked, cheap “airport” hotel. Luckily we could still see departures from our room!

Day 5, our last day- we were in two minds whether to go to one of the museums in the city, but decided to have a quiet day at the airport.
Below is a full list of what we saw for the day- sorry, there is quite a bit of repetition of the previous day’s log but it gives a good idea of what can be seen-

Phil/Keith, Looks like a great trip- thanks for sharing the pictures- reference the DC6B in the Museum I saw that at Manchester in the late sixties if memory serves me well operating for Adria Airways along with YU-AFB, C, D, and E- not at the same time of course- although I am not a great picture taker I have one of one of the above in black and white taken from the Manchester visitors pier. Happy Days Bob
