Hi Graham - I recall reading about this incident on the Area 51 website - see link below - go to Black projects tab. You might also wish to check out the Area 51 discussion forum which adds to the story. Cheers Keith www.dreamlandresort.com/

Wow, that's a fascinating read which brings up more questions than answers. You immediately think of the SR-71 based on the description given by some of the witnesses but it had already been in service since 1968, which was 26 years prior to the incident.

Graham
I was on at LATCC that evening ,but information was sparse and it was only later we got to know the C-5 was a C-5C that went to Boscombe Down.I have always kept the Air forces Monthly edition that covered this incident.

There was a similar 'episode' at around the same time at an airfield in Western Scotland too.

Andover,
As you state there were always rumours if no sightings of activity at EGQJ-Machrihanish, with its remote location and straight off "the Ocean". Although I was based at ScOATCC from 1980-1986 ,but things could be done more in secret then than now,I only ever made to visits Sept 1982 for some P-3's from an overflight and circuits ,and the long return journey in March 1984 for 35 xUSMC F-4,EA-6,A-6 and C-130. There was always the "rumour" never proven of underground storage areas.
