The reception varies so much from field to field doesn't it? Two of the friendliest fields I've visited are both in Cornwall, namely Bodmin and Perranporth whereas I've also been told to "sling yer hook" in many others. I've never understood why people need to be so rude and discourteous, you ask politely, and regardless of whether enthusiasts are welcome or not, deserve a polite response.
The classic example was the ignoramus who was "in charge" (I don't know what his official title was) of the Shadow hanger at Old Sarum who would bellow at you when you were still ten yards from the hanger door. A onanist of the highest order.

hi, yes Graham its as you say, Bodmin is 1 of the 2 friendliest airfields i've ever visited, a few visits ago i asked in the tower, he said yes, and then gave me the key to the small hangar. The other is Pocklington, which is my next reported visit... it does'nt take much to be polite, thats why after i ask if its "ok" i will always say thankyou, and if at all possible go back to let them know i'm finished. If its "no" its ok thanks, in the hope that if someone else should visit, they might change their atitude...

It is odd that some regard people with our hobby as some sort of weirdo or as a rather untrustworthy person. I suppose that evolves from the tiny minority who chuck the rules aside and do what they like when visiting an airfield and as always, that's gets everyone else tarred with the same brush. Dunkeswell is another friendly place where I've always asked and always been allowed to look around, assuming of course that your car survives the perimeter "road" assault course without busting an axle. It's the same for some of my local fields like Yatesbury and Clench Common, at the latter they often put the kettle on and break out the biscuit tin!
I recall a visit to Bodmin about six or seven years ago, asked in what was then still the old tower, was granted full access, and was shown round by a charming, elderly chap by the name of Sandy, he'd been a GA pilot for most of his life I believe, knew everything about the airfield and all of its residents and we chatted for the entire walk around. I've visited a few times since that day but have not seen Sandy around so I really hope he's OK.

hi, at Bodmin in July, there was a couple sitting near the cafe, and as i was looking in the man said the cafe closed the ladys ill, and i replyed i was after permission to look round, ah a enthusiast, and i said yes. He asked had i seen the Norman Freelance, i said NACI, he said yes its mine, and we got talking about it, the wings folding back etc, and he said thats what we are waiting for, one hour for the oil pressure to settle, we spoke for a good half an hour. Then down by the small hangar a man was pulling a plane out, so i said i've asked permission to look round, then do you want a hand moving the aircraft, but said he was ok, so we talked and he asked do you want a flight, i've got to stay current... so there are decent people out there, especially when they see you are interested. Again at Bembridge i was standing at a crash gate when a car pulled up to go in, so i opened the gate to let him in, he then got out, and i said joking "technically i broke the law then", he laughed, and asked you an enthusiast? i said yes for my sins, and he said we've time for you, over at Hurn your extra eyes for us, and offered to take me over to Hurn.
anyway i've rambled on long enough, regards, dave...

Last year after leaving the Air Britain rally at Turweston, called in at Hinton in the Hedges, walking around and there was a chap working on his aircraft, i asked if it was ok to take a photo?Of course,he replied, we then got chatting and he got to tell me how things had turned sour at Bicester. Certainly interesting to hear.I think if you show an interest as opposed to just wanting the registration you get a better response. Have also been shouted at from the shadow hangar at Old Sarum, also the maintenance hangar at Oaksey Park.
