After leaving O'Hare (logs on O'Hare thread) at about midday, we set off for Oshkosh via various stops.
Non-stop it would take about 3 hours, but we spent all afternoon and evening stopping at various airfields, and looking for wrecks and relics.
We probably would have made more by staying at O'Hare longer, or getting to Oshkosh sooner, but it was good to add lots of different airfields to the log!
First stop was NAS Glenview museum. When I visited the airfield in 1990 it was an active base with Navy Hercules. Now there is just a small museum, with the only aircraft being a Sikorsky HH.52 Seaguard stored outside.

Not that far north of Chicago is Chicago Exceutive field. Like most airfields we visited there were dozens of hangars, so we probably only ever saw a fraction of what is actually there. Of interest here were a few biz-jets and a Widgeon outside.
There was a viewing are with benches and the tower frequency being transmitted. Shame this can't catch on at home!

Next was NAS Great Lakes Training Center. We knew about the Skyhawk, but the Tomcat was a welcome surprise, although unfortunately not photographable.

Again, lots of hangars, but a few of interest outside, including bizjets, a USCG Dolphin and a UH.1 which appeared to be preserved or dumped, and only marked "SHERIFF".

Now into Wisconsin.. Kenosha Regional
Dozens and dozens of hangars here! Fortunately the one that was open had 2 Mustangs, a Duck and 2 Goose (Geese?) in, and the owner was happy for us to look around. The Mustangs were then seen at Oshkosh all week.
There was also a HR- Antonov An-2 outside!

Next stop was Racine, which looked like being a complete waste of time.
We could only see a Cessna outside from the south side , and went round the whole field without being able to read it or see anything else.
To stop it being a complete write-off we thought we'd have another quick try from a different point on the south side.
We couldn't see the Cessna, but found a Mohawk tucked away! Plus a PA-31 landed, so persistence aid off!

Onto Milwaukee now ,arriving early evening. This was an interesting airport with a good mixture of aircraft
This also had a viewing area, which allowed a good view of the terminal. You could drive under the runway, and get views back to the cargo area from the Citation centre.
There were 2 FedEx C.208 on this evening, but we could only read one off.
On our return a few days later there were 8 of them.

Penultimate stop of the day was Lawrence J.Timmerman airport, just up the road.

Last stop for the day was Fond Du Lac.
The airport is about 20miles south of Oshkosh, and again, write next to the Interstate.
Fond Du Lac is used as a meeting point for some pilots to fly into Oshkosh together, or some stay there for the show as they don't want to fly into Oshkosh itself.
This means that there are hundreds of visiting aircraft here.
On this evening we contented ourselves with a quick drive past the terminal and hangar areas in the dark, to read off some of the larger aircraft.

It was past 9 o'clock by now, so we drove past Oshkosh and up to our motel in Appleton to end a very successful day.
Four days at Oshkosh were to follow. I have no idea how long it will take to type up that log!!
