I found this on PPRune so some of you may have already seen the reference, but for those that haven't the whole of each issue is available. They make fascinating reading whether you were around then or not.
The greyed out boxes for issues between September 1963 and April 1965 suggest that they may eventually become available.

Thanks for the link foxfire, certainly the golden age of British aeronautical engineering, an age long since gone.

hi, that brings to mind my first Air Pictorial, i was going Farnborough 1962 show, and the bus had stopped in Banbury for a potty break and stretch the legs, so walking around the main street, looked and found "the white horse," then went into a paper shop, and saw Air Pictorial May 1962 bought it, 1/6 old money? then ordered it monthly from local paper shop. till 2009 i think. Also Aircraft Illustrated, plus Extra. Aviation News paper first, then magazine, Flight, It was getting expensive then, got married but carried on with them as mrs worked in W.H.Smiths and she got a discount...till she finished, then i stopped them. i found those old mags gave spotters info, then it changed and they were getting a lot more advertisings...
regards, dave...

I see that the issues for September and October 1963 have appeared since I posted the original link a week ago so it's obviously an on-going project.

First off , many thanks for the 'LIKES' ! Re foxfire , it does seem to be an ongoing project which is good news . We shall have to be patient and not rock the boat other wise it may stop . Good reading (again ) for these dark nights . Re Dave and first Air Pic . I used to read a mate's copy and I bought a more military orientated monthly the name of which I can not recall unfortunately , which he borrowed so we both got the best out of it . Later or for special editions , I would buy my own Air Pic . They did the Viscount history and prod list over several editions . That will be good if it is reproduced . Chrisj

hi chrisj, i was well pleased with my first years of having Air Pic, because of the SBAC show reports and participents, amongst other items, back in those early days of spotting, i was not so good on civil types, (to be honest i seem to have gone full circle especially the GA nowadays.) so i noted the colourings, and good old AP noted them, so all was good. After about 1966-68 they stopped doing that, so in my case things got harder... but a-oh i'm still here and still trying.

Dave , I know what you mean about identifying types . At one time it was relatively easy but now days Biz jets and helicopters all seem to look alike ( with in their respective sub-types) and as for those light aircraft ?? One thing I always found with Air Pic was that there was always a mistake in there some where , be it a miss noted registration or similar . This has continued to this day in the current magazine which is a cheap way of producing several magazines under one cover . Oh well , such is progress .... Chris

I'm always in awe of those who can identify GA immediately, my "talents of recognition" extend to a Pa28, a C42 and a Tiger Moth and even then, the Tiger Moth is more likely to be a Stampe. Mind you, look at how many homebuilds there are around these days, wandering around at Popham at the Microlight Fayre and I'm lucky to know what any of them are.

Ah ! Then there is another extreme - Model Balloons ! I remember one PFA Rallye where a group displayed a number of registered model balloons on their stand . These were black bin bags ! A point to show how stupid the system was at that time ! Chris

Any one who has had a look at the Air Pictorials available on line via steemrok , will have noticed that some are just blank greys . I contacted the 'author' via steemrok home page and their contact option , he is Julien Evans and currently intends to provide scans of Air Pictorials September 62 to December 65 . This is because these are the ones that he has available . I asked if it is intended to have earlier editions available ( or later ones ) and it would seem to be dependant on him obtaining them . So I wonder if anyone has these others could they be lent to him for scanning or could the owner of such copies provide scanns to him ? These are my thoughts and not his . At this time he has made available September 62 to December 63 . I hope 'foxfire' does not mind my intervention on this ? Thanks . Chrisj

chrisj , well done for making contact with Steemrok and finding out who's behind it. I used to take Air Pictorial (though somewhat later than the 60s!) but no longer have them after several home moves. I hope Julien is able to acquire good copies of AP from others to continue this fascinating effort. Incidentally, Julien is the writer/publisher of several aviation books, all available on Amazon.

Thanks foxfire , I too had to dispose off just about all of my magazines and some books as we downsized a few years back . I had Air Pic from about 1959 to well into the nineties or so as well as Flypast from the first . LAAS from the old green covers - about late sixties I think and BARG from seventies . Many have become available as on line down loads over the past few years and BARG as dvds . So I hope the Air Pics do get scanned . Chris

I have just tried to log onto the site providing the scans of Air Pictorials and they seem to have done a runner ! All I get is the Air Pic header . I looked on the site yesterday and they were there , in fact one or two more than when we first heard about them . Does anyone know what is going on please ? I thought permission had been given for their reproduction so is it yet another case of someone upsetting the very helpful originator ? Chrisj

It had me worried too . I like re reading these old magazines as I can still recall those times . Strange that I commented that some one may of upset the provider . In the latest to be available there is a letter from the owners of Kidlington saying that some person (s) had damaged aircraft so a block is on for spotters visiting . I can recall this and it was not just this one location . Still , given time I hear that with restrictions it is now possible to wander about Kidlington once more - only took about fifty years ! chris

hi, i used to visit Oxford on our way to the RAF Abingdon B of B open days, and RIAT's, and it was like a fortress, stop at the entrance and security was on you... called there in 2021, wandered around a bit till i got to the security office, went in and said i was a enthusiast, and would it be alright to look around. The young man seemed abit surprised, but said yes ok and then as a after thought as i was going out the door, said please no photos around the hangars...as you said chrisj it only took about 50yrs, but some still don't trust us!!!
regards, dave...

Yes Dave , I had read on some other site a while back that one parks the car at a small carpark and asks to wander . Only stipulation was no photos and no hangar entry . only a matter of time before someone brings out a camera or phone ! Still it is good while it lasts and let us hope that is a very long time !
