Apologies short notice but on Talking Pictures TV tonight at 7.05 a nostalgic short film showing a school parties trip to London. If memory serves me right they visit Heathrow near the end of the film with some good shots.

hi, thanks for the heads up, i went on a school trip around that time, we had a choice London Airport or the Planetarium, as the bug hadn't got me, i choose the Planetarium?. I did visit LAP in 1953 or 4, as some relations were visiting from the States, from what i can remember we waited in a quonset hut and as the PAA Stratocruiser arrived we went outside, in a garden area to see it...
regards, dave...

Ah , more nostalgia ! Back around 1959 - 60 ish , long haul used North Side which could be a pain at times to read off registrations although one could view the whole apron from either end . The aircraft parked side to side so at times it was a wait for one to move . Central had the Queen's Building with good views . During one school holiday and getting bored , a couple of us had a look around the area near to the top of the tunnel . What we found was an old viewing area that had at one time , contained playing area and café . It was located right next to the taxiway with a clear view of the northern runway . We stayed there for the afternoon and no one came anyway near to us . Could do with something like that now but sadly it is now a car park . Chrisj

If I recall, my first LAP visit was in 1968, I would have been 12 and living in Reading. My parents had no qualms in those far off days of letting me take the double decker bus to LAP. In fact, the same year, I took the train from Reading via London to Leeds to stay with my great aunt and uncle for a week. Half a century later, that would fill any self respecting parent with absolute fear, times have changed so much, and invariably for the worse.
