This is very sad and all too premature. Methinks it will leave a capability gap until MOD gets its act together. Its prompted me to check out my Hercules flights which are:
XV211 Lyneham to Lyneham (as an air cadet) 63-7808 Bahrain to Saudi ZH873 Saudi to Kuwait 63-7781 Bahrain to Saudi ZH875 Saudi to Kuwait ZH870 Saudi to Kuwait 64-0498 Bahrain to Saudi ZH876 Saudi to Kuwait 72-0165 Bahrain to Saudi ZH870 Sierra Leone to Lyneham via Tenerife
I sure do miss this beast flying over my house in Chippenham on approach to Lyneham.

My parents moved to Cherhill, about three miles east of Calne in 1968. As the crow flies, Lyneham was about six miles away. It was quite usual to see several in the circuit and on Saturdays, I'd cycle to the New Zealand crash gate where they'd come over on finals at 100ft. It won't be the same without them, that's for sure....

Hi Graham. I bet you too would frequently see 4 Hercs doing a tail chase over Wiltshire. Due to MOD cutbacks this was sadly cut down to just two!

Hi Keith, I may have mentioned this previously but where we lived at Cherhill was a transport cafe and one of the cooks was married to a chap who worked in the tower at Lyneham. He very kindly took me and my brother around the base one Saturday. Another memory is driving past Lyneham on the A3102 Calne - Swindon road, seeing the grass mound at the base on our left with so many Herc tails poking above it.

Noted on ADS-B Exchange this afternoon 3 x C130's going along the south coast quite a way out at sea, ZH870 (OMEN1), ZH868 & ZH871.

Unfortunately, they came nowhere close to Devizes, they went well over to the west routing Westbury - Chippenham which was disappointing given the flypast charts indicated we would get a good view.
