It doesn't seem five minutes since I started the July pages and here we are already in to August, this year is going frighteningly quickly. I suppose the supermarkets will start filling up with Barbie dolls ready for Christmas soon and a small part of me wonders whether Airfix will reintroduce the B-29 kit? If I recall, I made that when I was in my early teens. Weather in July was invariably terrible after seven weeks of blue skies from mid May until the end of June. The weather boffins say we "might" get some good weather in August but I doubt many of us are holding our breath.

In Yorkshire for a few days, and surprisingly G-MCGH S92 has just clattered overhead Pickering. Planning to go to Elvington on Sunday en route home; particular interest in the Halifax, as my late father-in-law was ground crew in 102 Sqn at Polkington working on Halifaxes.

Summer? What Summer. Like it or not though I suppose this has to be preferable to scorching temperatures and wildfires, so maybe we have something to thank the jeststream for even if a few decent days would be nice.
I've had nothing to report since 27th July so it's good to get something on board for August at last.

Hi Phil - Enjoy your visit. My late father was also ground crew (airframe fitter) on the Halifax with 10Sq at Melbourne, Yorks before posting to an OTU in India for the tail end of the war. The volunteers have done a wonderful job on the replica Halifax "LV607" at Elvington, a fitting memorial to all Halifax crew both ground and air. I call it a replica as there is so very little original material in the aircraft. The wings and centre fuselage were salvaged at the Catterick Fire School from Hastings TG536 (which I first saw visiting Odiham during Farnborough week in 1968). The only genuine part of the fuselage is a 25 ft part from the tail section of Halifax HR792 which crashed on the Isle of Lewis in 1945 and which a local had salvaged to use as a chicken house. The real LV607 survived 128 operations during the war and was displayed post war on London’s Oxford Street but nevertheless still ended up being scrapped. A genuine part of her (with the name and mission markings) can however be found hanging in the RAF Museum at Hendon. IMG_0936 by dave tompkins, on Flickr IMG_0930a by dave tompkins, on Flickr If you visit the Canadian museum at Trenton they have a genuine restored Halifax NA337 which ditched in Lake Mjosa on the night of 23/24 April 1945, having been hit by anti-aircraft fire which took out two engines and set fire to the starboard wing. It had completed a supply drop mission from Tarrant Rushton to the Norwegian Resistance when it was hit on leaving the drop zone. The ditching appears to have been successful (just the rear fuselage breaking off) but, with the exception of the rear gunner, the remaining crew died of hypothermia before rescue arrived. The rear gunner who was captured amazingly survived to actually be present when the aircraft was lifted from the lake bed in 1995. He finally passed away in 2007. The wreck was in remarkably good condition. I saw it in Canada in mid restoration (no photos sadly as the museum had a power failure mid visit and the cramped restoration shed was in total darkness), but the final result now on full dosplay is superb. The RAF Museum at Hendon of course has the wreck of 35Sq Halifax W1048 which force landed on the frozen Lake Hoklingen in Norway (and subsequently sank) after flak hits during an unsuccessful raid on the battleship Turpitz. All crew members survived. The condition of the wreck when raised in 1973 meant that any attempt to restore the aircraft (other than the nose section and a fully restored original engine placed beside it) would not only have been vastly expensive but, in any event, effectively result in a replica as so little of the original could realistically be used. The Museum therefore wisely decided to stabilize the wreck but to display it in its salvaged condition and spayed with corrosion inhibitor as what is, I think, a truly haunting memorial.

We spent aninteresting 90 mins at Elvington museum, and were given a heads up on XZ383 Jaguar, out behind the hangar and delivered at 07.00 this morning. We had a good chat with a retired airline pilot, whose father had been a flight engineer on Halifax. One of the better ways of spending a wet Saturday.

The slow but steady start to August continues with three frames yesterday including two more gliders that came over home from Keevil. I had to nip over to Trowbridge yesterday afternoon and on the way back, followed two glider trailers to Devizes which presumably had been launching from either Keevil or Longbridge Deverill.

The day started really well with the Merlin on delivery to Poland. Coming straight overhead was ZR288 with its Polish reg taped over. This was followed by TC-FHG A320 and G-SUND before conditions permitted slight trailing and BBJ HL8222 hit the book. A320 SX-NEG completed the morning for me as it passed OTT.
In the afternoon Ryanair Max EI-IHJ started proceedings and fellow Max TF-ICI followed, before Biggin Hill movements kicked in, with C510 N680DE departing, and finally a mini formation of G-ETPP AW139 and G-ETPN A109 departed to the South West, requiring a dash upstairs to see across the houses. (One advantage of living at the top of a hill.)

Hope to briefly call in at Popham too, but will miss the Friday which was the best day last year, Currently in Austria until Saturday. Family holiday - definitely not a spotting trip! Staying away from airfields and museums, so that I can drop Oshkosh 2024 into the conversation…. (Been to the nearby museums before fortunately!) There are a few fairly uninteresting overflights.
Flying back from Munich on Saturday and hope to spend an hour at Popham that afternoon. I was going to go Sunday too but now will watch the women’s World Cup final! Maybe see some of you on Saturday

Today was special. My birthday present from my wife was a tour of the Heritage Hangar at Biggin Hill. A short stop at the Lookout Cafe before the tour yielded CS-LTX C680, then an authorised trip through the barriers around to the hangar, noting Islander G-BJWL and Baron G-DGST en route.
The tour was 90 minutes, and flew past. New to me were P9372 Spitfire1, RM694 Spitfire xiv which is a long way from rebuild, ML119 Spitfire ix, and unmarked silver Spitfire ix being rebuilt as a 2 seater, which I believe is EN570.
As the tour finished the weather improved and 3 of the two-seaters were pushed out and we watched 2 depart in nice light for photos.
Global VH-LEF and SR20 G-SRXX completed the log (but I also logged arrival G4 N899AL from home.)
So if your missus is stumped for present ideas for you, I can recommend this tour.
