Great video, there's been a lot of 707 stuff appearing on utube just lately, one thing I have noticed was the prototype has the reg under the wing, only time I've ever seen that on and American jet. Another video I watched last night was about a supersonic DC8, there was a lot of colour video of 707s and Comets in it as well. Something I didn't know was that the DC8 was in competition with the 707 for the USAF tanker role, it seems the DC8 was a far superior airframe but the 707 was chosen, anybody know why they went for the 707?

Just guessing but probably price? I remember seeing N70700 at the Dulles show in early June 1972. What became of the Lufty 707 at Hamburg?

It was a question of ready availability. Lockheed also bid for the contract with a proposed rear engined tanker (the L-193) and were originally awarded the contract in 1955. This decision was however overturned in favour of the 707 which was already an existing type and would be available some years before either the Lockheed or DC8 proposals. Even when the contract was transferred to Boeing the Air Force left the door open for the L-193 and initially only ordered a fraction of the tankers it needed pending development of the L-193. In the event the Lockheed L-193 never got off the drawing board while the first DC8 did not fly until 1958. The first KC135 was delivered in June 1957.

The Saudi 707 shown could be the one trapped at the old Jeddah airport . I seemed to always land there from the same direction and on the same runway ( they have three parallel runways in that direction . On one occasion I landed on a different runway although normal direction . We flew parallel to a road which had several roundabouts all with aircraft on them . A DC3/C47 on one and a Beech twin on another I recall . Also over the old airport's terminal which had a stranded 707 outside . It was stranded because just about everywhere had been built on . Next time I saw it the wings had been removed . Chrisj

Hi Jeff.
That video of the DC8 going supersonic popped up on my YouTube feed but I've not watched it yet. I thought the Convair Coronado (CV990) had a fair bit of speed too. I also thought the VC10 was the fastest trans Atlantic jet(Concorde apart) on scheduled services but I stand to be corrected? The original 707 is now firmly ensconced in the NASM at Dulles which I visited back in 2011.
