Dave, I was driving artics back when the "wimmin" were camped outside Greenham, in fact the haulage firm I worked for took dozens of loads of plasterboard to the site over a six month period. I remember one day in atrocious weather, driving empty from Basingstoke to Swindon to collect a load and seeing a person with their thumb out just before the roundabout where the road bears right, up the hill to Newbury. I stopped for this person, it was torrential rain and I couldn't even see until they climbed into the passenger door whether it was male or female.
As it happens, it was a rather attractive young lady, probably about 25, very polite, she was soaked to the skin so she asked if she could take her coat off to dry out a bit. Fine by me, what I didn't realise that it didn't stop at the coat, off came the jeans, the jumper, the t-shirt and her socks and she sat there in her undies all the way to Swindon. She had been on the peace camp but was fed up getting soaked and had decided to head for home in Bristol. Still brings me out in a cold sweat thirty odd years later....

I wonder if house prices will drop in the area, someone could pick up a bargain if they do 😉

hi, Lakenheath as had 2 accidents involving the "big uns", 1956 and 1961, the last time i went past Lakenheath and Thetford on the train back in the late 70's, there was large area's of new build houses, so people back then must have either not known or cared about them. So nowadays with the internet and social media it could re-kindle... regards, dave...

Just my personal thoughts . Every day we see posts on various platforms , giving our military secrets to Mr P and other activists . The lack of manpower ( and woman power . PC) , The store of Nukes , State of the RN ships and so on . This all plays into the hands of those who wish us harm . There should be no news of what aid is going to Ukraine . OR anyone else . We all know that defence spending in real terms has decreased over the years but please do not tell the world of our situation ! We did not during my twenty six years service so why now ? Just my thoughts . Chrisj

All hype about the bombs in reality is a non issue, whether new or not. I have lived in between AWE Aldermanston and AWE Burghfield Common since 1991 ,would be gone in nanno second, but houses are sought after.
The only thing that affects house prices is the ever increasing request to put huge housing estates, and the biggest problem in the local areais our Gypsey camp population (but we are not allowed to say that ,and it took the tragic death of PC Andrew Harper for the Police to actually go into the Camp, currently closed)

Bill, I was about 27-28 then, not much older than she looked to be. Oddly, all these years later, I remember the incident rather well....
