Following on from yesterday (at Jeff’s request) a few I’ve taken on 20 February
1982 – Gatwick
A misty day. In the background of the BCAL DC10 and the Philippine 747 is the stored Laker fleet after they went into liquidation two weeks earlier. My wife and I knew Sir Freddie quite well over the years and have some good memories of him, including sitting with him and his photo collection and correcting some of his captions. Although he died this month in 2006, even now when flying trans-Atlantic I always still give him a silent nod of thanks for breaking the mould of the airlines’ legacy of high fares. Fitting that the first Norwegian Air Shuttle 737MAX carried an image of him on its fin, an image that they later used on a 787.

1982 – Biggin Hill
Despite the titles, G-KOOL was an ex RAF Devon rather than a Sea Devon. After service at Northolt and Andover for many years it was transferred to the Navy for fishery patrol work out of Lee on Solent. Sold off, it was at Biggin for a failed proposal for fish carrying charters but retired to the East Surrey College in Redhill for instructional use, parked outside in an overall blue scheme. It was saved from the breakers by some great work by the East Surrey Aviation Group in 1992 and eventually preserved in the museum at Elvington with its original serial VP967.

Graphed her again at Elvington in 2015 (just 6,000 hours on the clock).

2000 – Tucson
Some of the stored aircraft (note 7 NAMC YS11s) and the USAF flight line with some 40 F16s before the shelters were built.

2000 - Davis Monthan
Always the highlight of any US trip, visited 11 times so far (and Lord knows how many hundreds of photos) and hope to make it a round dozen later this year. Photo mount that day was a 3 month old Skyhawk N387SP but have had 6 different aircraft over the years for the photo flights. Among those below are some of the civil 707s, 191 of which were bought by the USAF in the 1980s for use in the KC135E upgrade programme using mainly the engines and tail fins. I’ve also thrown in some of the lesser known US Navy types plus a good old Shorts 330 from the test centre at Edwards. 20 February 2000 was a rare cloudy day in Arizona.
