There are some quite good photos of the ones at St. Athan/Museum , on both the South Wales Group's Museum pages and one posted on Fighter Control . On FC I could not see a Kemble heading so typed Kemble into the provided search box and up it came . It sounds like these are going to be difficult to identify and track as the get chopped ( if that is what is to be ) . Chrisj

Just to clarify- they are not at St Athan museum…. They are at a private company behind the museum. The photo that is generally linked, only shows the back row - it shows some of the Grobs, but not all 13 of them. As I said, if anyone is planning on going and wants to know more, then private message me- I don’t want to put it on here. But the identities of all 13 outside at St Athan are known and confirmed. But I’ve read that some are to be possibly kept for museums.
At Kemble it certainly seems like they’re for the chop as they are all in the scrapping area. Now that the Aerobility plan has fallen through I guess there is no use for them. I think I could see all of them by viewing from both sides of the airport:. These don’t seem to be known yet - if anyone can provide tail codes that would be much appreciated!

Probably a bit misleading saying they are AT the museum but that is where they are located , not IN the museum . They do not belong to the South Wales Aviation Museum but were moved to the rear of the museum on 23 & 27 Feb 2024 to await their fate . Dates are off the museum site and they were moved from Bro Tathan Business Park where they were previously stored . Serials are known both on the museum site and the UK Serials site . I understand that a number were or are stored at Little Ris. The UK Serials site lists those demobbed but whilst mentioning those at St. Athan , it does not mention Little Ris. . Is it possible for someone in the know to publish these please ? It may help to sort out the Kemble Grobs . Chrisj

The Kemble Grob situation is unclear at the moment. I have said that I will try to clarify when I can but my contact at ASI is currently away on business. I will need to have a meeting with him to discuss in due course. Please bear in mind that the details may not be made available…these things can sometimes be sensitive (for whatever reasons).
From what I can gather - overall, there are 61 decommed/demobbed/civilianised Grob Vigilants involved in the Aerobility ‘fiasco’. Up to 20 might be at Kemble plus the bunch already seemingly know about at Saints. Again, afaik, the ones at Kemble are to be chopped up. I do not know what is behind this apparent waste of aircraft but believe it is tied up with long term maintenance and thus ongoing certification issues. I think Aerobility had hoped that the various issues could be resolved and that they could convert and resuscitate some of the Grobs for disabled pilot operations. Clearly, for some at least, this has not been possible.
This is my ‘take’ on the situation. Picked up from bits and pieces off the ‘net’. I had no idea that any Grobs had arrived until I noticed cars and people parking in unusual places around the outside of the airfield!

This story seems to go on and on .... Over on the mil-spotter forum there are some recent posts on the Vigilant situation . The say two others are at St. Athan in Horizon's facility ZH186 & 269 . Also I had a post from a friend in which the boss of an aircraft owner's brother was asked if he had an empty barn to store 31 disassembled RAF training aircraft as they had to be moved from Little Ris. pronto or be scrapped . I think it would wrong at this time , to say which farm they are or are to be , moved to , but it is near Keevil . chrisj

ZH186 is listed as inside. ZH267 is actually the other inside, not 269. ZH269 is outside (seen by me) and is in the photo that is doing the rounds.

Mr 'ZZ' is of course correct in that ZH186 & 267 are the two held by Horizon . The person on mil-spotters had it wrong and whilst distracted I had copied it over . Full apologies for that one . Chrisj

Good Morning all,
I have not posted on the forum for several years, primarily because I had to put the hobby on a bit of a back burner due to family health issues (not me I hasten to add). These Vigilant's have cause quite a stir ! On a private message board called AB-IX, there is also a ongoing thread relating to these. I re-create below the latest post in the thread, and hopefully it should answer some of the above questions (or indeed generate more!) :-

I could see the top of the letter, it could only be H or U and there isn’t a U That was my thinking, but Adrian’s excellent list and a recent post on FC, stating that SH was in Germany last year, cast a little doubt on that… Looking at various reports/lists, I wonder if there is confusion over whether it is SH or SM seen at Kemble… Thanks for the list Adrian- extremely useful!

A few bits of nostalgia while we await a definitive list of the Vigilants at Kemble (and there are some updates to the useful list from Adrian and with totals variously reported as 19,20 or 21) and perhaps more importantly whether, as has been reported, that some are not visible at all from the public roads being well hidden between a pair of the airliners in the scrap area. By the way I read codes TV (ZH148) and UV (ZH263) from the Cirencester road. Sadly (but wisely) forced into premature retirement over poor cycle, TBO and maintenance records which rendered it impossible to ascertain the airworthiness status of the aircraft.Purchased by Aerobility with a grant from the DfT they managed to get a handful certificated with new Rotax engines and other mods with the help of the companies at Membury and Longbridge Deverill. Airborne Composites at the latter were to modify the aircraft to hand controls only, so as enabling use by those with lower limb disabilities which rendered the use of the rudder (essential with the type) impossible. What the fate of these will be remains to be seen. Meanwhile they are in a locked shed on the opposite side of the road from the airstrip at Wing Farm. At least those actually certificated for Aerobility continue to perform a valuable role in promoting disability flying. More power to their elbow. The Vigilant replaced the Venture with the Air Cadet units. Based on a higher weight version of the Grob 109B I graphed G-CHAR at Popham at the 2002 New Year fly-in after we had landed having taken her on a short bimble over my home village. ac 105 by dave tompkins, on Flickr 02-aa by dave tompkins, on Flickr An early delivery without a tail code (it became TL) of the A&AEE taken at Boscomber Down in 1990. 90-fl by dave tompkins, on Flickr Just a few of the others I’ve taken over the years, including showing the large wingspan of the type. Thanks Dave, I seem to recall that there were/are two Vigilants based at Wing Farm that formed a display team known as "Airborne Pyrotechnics", I used to see them over home here on a regular basis.

Right then! Whilst doing a bit of work with ASI earlier this week, I took the chance to have a look at the Grobs (needed an instrument - failed). Even up close they are difficult to identify but having looked very closely at my photos (I am not publishing the images anywhere) the tail codes are as follows:-
UV, SA,TV, TM, TD, UL, TW, SR, SH, TB, SJ, UR, SC, TE, UF, SQ, TT, UG, TN, TL, TS.
That makes 21 in total. Afaik, 2 have already moved/gone - TS and guessing UV. Quite a few have serials sprayed over; one or two are a bit battered and all have been stripped of instruments/useful bits.
Utterly impossible to keep tabs on these little things.
No, not cross-checked with any other listings.

Almost uniquely complete it was clearly destined for better things as it was parked away from the main group in the store.

I think UV was the most complete. It will not fly again though. It will be in a garden somewhere!

UV looked in good nick away from the rest. The row at the back had five in between SH and SQ with three more further along one of which was pointing the other way. TV was across the front of the row along with three others but it was impossible to identify any others. I don’t suppose you know the order of those you saw!

Morning Chaps,
Can I just say that we (AFA) are blessed with some tremendous ‘sleuth’s’ in its ranks.
The detail shown in sorting out these Vigilant’s is just incredible.
Thanks to one and all.
