My PC runs on Windows 8.1 and recently has started failing to update itself. It will try to, but then an error message shows up which says something like "failed to update, reverting the changes". It might then try again, 2 or 3 times before giving up. The outcome is that the PC is permanently running slowly because it needs those updates.
Looked on line, tried system restore, makes no difference. I've run the official diagnostic tool which tells me the errors have been fixed, but it still won't update. Tried the command prompt, typed in what I need to do, but even though I am the sole user ( and am logged on as "administrator") the command prompt won't let the instructions run as it is an "elevated command", .i.e. one that only an administrator can ask for, so I am no better off. Have also tried a simple restart, but again, it attempts to download the updates, but fails and re configures minus the updates.
Can any PC boffins out there offer a fix please? Thanks

To get command prompt to run elevated commands, I believe you need to right click the command prompt option and choose "run as administrator".
Hope that helps.

Morning all, Jeff, I think if she does have that on her PC, it just means that she can register for her free download but nothing will happen until July 29th

Hello Dave, funnily enough, I never had any issues with Windows 8.1 when it was released. Odd thing about my laptop here is that if I go into my account, I am 100% registered as "administrator" yet when I try to get my updates manually, it tells me " you don't have administrator rights to do this".
It tells me I can roll back to a point in time prior to the issues, but the earliest restore point it will allow me to roll back to was only three weeks ago, which was well after the update issues started.

hi, my laptop is Windows 7, great no issues, the family bought me a desk top one with Windows 8 and I had problems then they brought out 8-1 to cure the teething problems, which was a bit better but I've got files and spread-sheets from 7, that won't transfer...but a-oh that's progress. I have found though all these labour saving devices are great till they start playing up.
regards from a dinosaur,
dave...
