Its a new taxiing fuel saving device..... The thinking is you start your engines just before you get to the runway !! With taxiing and holding times anywhere up to 45 mins at Airports like LHR it could save a lot of fuel

hi, morning, Caravan's have them, a mite slower though, but if the hamster could be induced to run a bit faster they could catch on...

The motor is permanently attached .... The extra fuel needed on a flight due to the extra weight the aircraft has to fly around with has to equal less than the amount of fuel used in taxiing!

What happens at airports where you HAVE to be pushed back? If you can do it yourself do you get it at a reduced charge,or even free?

well you wouldnt have to wait for a tug....when your ready your ready....not sure what you mean by HAVE to get pushed back. Airlines normally pay their handlers a fee for the turnaround operation which fluctuates between aircraft type and times of day...so yes they may get a reduced rate for not needing the Tug

I guess they would need extendable wing mirrors or a reversing camera, or perhaps stick their heads out of the flight deck window. !!!

Hi Guys,
As a Northwest Orient long termer, our fleet of DC-9's (inherited from the takeover of Republic Airlines) did this type of maneuver for many years... Witnessed it countless times and every time, with a DC-9 nose on to the terminal suddenly hitting the power was most off putting - always reminded me of the 'Airplane' skit when the 747 came through the terminal windows... But of course, our DC-9's never did. But seeing them going backwards without a tug was always a bit odd... No matter how many times you saw it...
Lovely memories....
Cheers.
Bill

Thanks Jeff... That brings back lots of memories... Having thought about it, we operated almost every variant of the DC-9 and I think they only did this maneuver with the 'short' 9's... I think.... I could be wrong - as you know!!!! Cheers mate. Bill
