Goodness me, seven killed, what a terrible tragedy.
EDIT - Caroline's daughter lives close to the scene and has just called to say that all the visitors to the show are to all intents stuck there as the A27 is closed in both directions. The Police won't open the southern exit from the field onto the A259 due to the sheer weight of traffic

Didn't keep an update due to phone ran out of battery.
2 Helimed and 1 coastguard helicopters were on the seen.
I doubt the show will carry on tomorrow. But the 'evacuation' of traffic as they called went rather swiftly so well done to them.

Another beautiful historic aeroplane lost for all time. How many times have we seen the result of a loop commenced from low altitude in high temperatures?
One feels deeply for all involved. Tragic beyond measure.

Now reported all 11 fatal casualties. The aircraft fuselage is due to be moved by crane tomorrow and the police say there is a possibility more casualties will be discovered

An intresting image has appeared on airplane-pictures.net which when 'Equalized' shows a vapour plume coming from the aircraft which cannot be seen on the unedited image link to photo

Not unusual for a Hunter to vent fuel under load, the a/c in question is pictured at other displays doing the same thing.
No surprise that the Hunter is grounded pending the AAIB report. Sensible response by the CAA (certainly not a knee jerk as many are claiming) once the details and reports are digested by the CAA and relevant authorities then a calm and well judged decision will be made.

As 240 says, the venting (of air and some small amount of fuel) is perfectly normal and is an essential method to control the pressurisation in the fuel tanks at high G and/or high engine thrust RPM. On the Hunter there are vents either side between the wing root and the undercarriage bays. Such venting can also be seen in the Typhoon displays, where the pressure vent is in the tail above the rudder. As 240 says, the CAA action is certainly not knee jerk (unlike some other suggestions being made in the understandable heat/distress of the moment) and is as the CAA says "a temporary restriction". Tragic though this event is it should be noted that, so far as I can recall, it is the first fatal event involving third parties arising from a UK air display since John Derry's DH110 broke up over Farnborough in 1952 - almost 63 years ago. How many third party fatalities have there been at other non-aviation events in all that time? Lessons are always there to be learned, such as the ban on flying towards the crowd following the Frecce disaster at Ramstein, but such lessons must be reasoned and follow a thorough investigation. I'm sure we all hope that the pilot makes a full recovery and our thoughts with all those affected. I first photographed WV372 at the 1975 open day at RAF Gutersloh when still in the red & white scheme of 4FTS

Plus Meteor, Sea Vixen and Canberra. Pretty much every airworthy civilian "vintage" jet type and not just UK registered Update CAA have now released an SN CAA So with the Vintage Aircraft going to their rightful place in a Museum, and of course the RAF/RN/AAC not spending the Money on Displaying At Shows due to the lack of finances & Foreign aircraft in the same boat It looks as if the Air show Season will be alot shorter and for most Static only, you could always Resurrect a Jaguar Harrier or Tornado to Display....... but we are talking about the CAA so no that`s not going to happen....

Civilian aircraft carrying drop tanks are not allowed to have fuel in them (especially in displays) and are there for cosmetic use only.

On the 1st Feb the Civil Aviation Authority released details of the latest proposal and in their words, describes ways in which to improve safety at airshows in the United Kingdom. looking into the proposal in detail reveals that it is nothing more than an inexplicable hike in airshow display charges. publicapps.caa.co.uk/docs/33/CAP%201371%20civil%20air%20display%20review%20actions%20eval.pdfWhile most shows have remained quiet on the matter so far, the organisers of the Biggin Hill Festival of Flight have spoken out and released the following statement: "We are dismayed to read the recent Civil Aviation Authority publication, “Proposed Air Display and Low Flying Permission Charges”, which could see the demise of the British Air Show. The headline of a 100% increase in charges for the display permission is bad enough but turn the page and a new charge has been introduced; a “post event charge” based on the number of display items. So in 2015 if you had between 18 & 24 display items you paid £1,497 for the CAA permission. In 2016 for 18 to 24 display items you will pay £6,994. And forget a big public show ever happening again for 31 items you will be asked to pay £20,390. This new charging policy will see the air shows large and small disappear for the calendar in the UK and its not just the display organisers who are affected, display pilots’ authorisations have gone up by 100% as well."A UK Goverment petition has been set up asking for the CAA to rethink these proposals, please follow this link and sign the petition petition.parliament.uk/petitions/120628 Also there is a new facebook page which has many event organises and display pilots as members, this group has been set up to help coordinate the battle with the CAA.
