This used to be a regular sight on tristars and 747s in the early days of the big jets.... Its also the pylon that G-VWOW will use to attach the rockets to for the virgin galactic flight. Also heard that VHOT has been bought by the virgin group as well .... Reason unknown at the moment !

Remember those days well as they thundered over my old house,if memory recalls I think most of my extra engine sightings were on Pan Am 747s.

I was a pax on a BA 747 going down to SYD once carrying an engine back to Qantas. The captain announced that you may have seen that we have an extra engine on the left hand side, it doesn't actually work. At which point some bright Aussie behind us said " well what's the bloody point of that then?" The captain went on to explain why. " oh right !" Came a sheepish reply from behind. Tony
