Graham - I was actually there that day. Drove down & back in a day from Chiswick. You beat me on the Hunters as I only logged 53! Here's a couple of memory jerkers for you taken on that long off day. Chivenor was at the time the home of 229OCU and launched 36 Hunters in a 229 formation.

Ah ! Ah ! How I remember it . A VERY costly airfield ! I was stationed there and married a 'local girl' . Very costly ! I worked in the Photo section and managed to see a fair few of the visitors . I can not recall if the mentioned show was the one , but one fly past for a show entailed most of the Hunters and Meteors flying past in a diamond formation . I watched a practice from near the flight line . All aircraft left the 'pans' and taxied down out of sight to the Barnstaple end of the runway . Then in pairs they tore down the runway and off . As one pair got airborne so another was half way along the runway and a third started to move at the start . A sight only equalled by the mass Vulcan take off at early Farnborough s ! We photographed them going and their fly past for prints to sell at the show . I now live across the river at Yelland but unfortunately the annual traffic can be counted on one hand . A great loss to the area ! Chrisj
