South Africa Trip Day 2 Monday 9th May Istanbul/Johannesburg

We boarded A330 TC-JOD operating flight TK38 for the 10 hour flight to Joburg.

Joburg has two parallel runways 03L/21R and 03R/21L with the latter being on the far side of the airport so unless you are monitoring a system like FR24 you have to wait for the planes to reach the terminal area.The general pattern at Joburg is landing on 03R,take offs on 03L although if it's quiet then they do have landings on 03L.

We landed approx 5 mins early @ 10.20 local time and Passport Control and baggage claim was all done some 15 mins after getting off the A330.We decided to put our bags into storage and we made our way to the viewing deck on the domestic terminal.This place has changed dramatically since our previous visit in 2006,most of course was carried out due to the World Cup held in South Africa in 2010.This viewing deck has been extended a lot,however it is all enclosed and has no seating although a children's creche on the same floor will hire you a chair if you want it,having said that there are a couple of vending machines here and TV screens showing arrivals/departures.

By now tiredness was setting in so we grabbed our bags and got a cab to our hotel where we were staying for the next 8 nights,it was only 3km from the airport.I will list hotels/prices etc at the end of my reports.

Was this a spotting trip or holiday or bit of both?

Hi zz,

It was a spotting trip with my best mate and ex work colleague Geoff Pierce.It has to be said though that I have a very understanding wife and after this trip,we have decided to maybe go to SA in 2018 as a holiday,she loves elephants and would jump at the chance of going to a Nature Reserve or two.
